One of my favorite touches from our upcoming dimensions feature... dimension text automatically detects what color is behind it, so it can choose an appropriate, high-contrast text color that's easy to read.

@steveruizok.bsky.social it's hard to get it to come up with different words on re-run. any tricks for forcing randomness/novelty?

(ok, to be fair, there are definitely problems in the set so far that require iteration or recursion in a way that is not especially suited to Grasshopper — I'm sure as the weeks go on it will become harder to keep this up.)

Andrew Heumann @andrewheumann.com · 08/12/2024
in case anyone still wants to make the argument that #Grasshopper3d isn't a programming language or isn't "real" coding, I've been solving this year's #AdventOfCode with it. Scripting components and looping components (e.g. Anemone) not allowed.

this one is really exercising my "explanatory ascii diagram in comment" muscle
A code comment reading:
"Left alone, this would always resize all matching gaps
while keeping the left edge of the whole sequence
stationary. But it's more intuitive (and works
better for the drag interaction) if we keep the
left edge of the edited dimension stationary, so
that the items to the left of it move in one
direction, and the items to the right move in the
other direction.
In our diagram:
if user edits & dimension
(there is a detailed and dare i say quite lovely ascii art diagram explaining the logic at this point in the comment)
To handle this shift, we find the last
translation before the gap we're currently
editing, and subtract it from all translations."

The complexity line below which an LLM-enabled system can be trusted to solve a coding problem keeps creeping steadily upwards. (And along with it, my comfort as a programmer relying on it for stuff, as well as my skill at directing its actions).

A fun AI moment today… had a bug I wanted to fix, so asked claude (via cursor) to fix it for me, and by god, it one-shotted it. This was a smallish problem, and I already had a sense of what the solution would take in my head, and it only needed to edit a single file to make the fix… but still…
a screenshot of cursor's AI chat UI, with the prompt "this logic handles <img> tags correctly, but I need it to also handle
simage> elements inside svg. Update accordingly." and correct steps to do so in response.
