Last week, 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan made his #USMNT debut. Many believe he's the next face of American soccer. Talked w/Santino Quaranta, once viewed as a generational talent himself, about Sullivan ahead of tonight's friendly vs. Mexico:

In Cade Cavalli, the Nats finally have a cornerstone pitcher in their rotation. But Cavalli alone won’t be enough. If they want to build a true contender, they’ll need to build a formidable pitching staff around him as soon as possible.
thebanner.com
Cade Cavalli is a strong building block. The Nationals have to add more.
ANALYSIS | The reality is the Nationals won’t be playing in October unless they address the glaring weakness that is their pitching staff, whose 4.65 ERA ranks 26th in baseball.

Cavalli was OK w/the location of the pitch to Trout. When asked if he could appreciate facing him, he laughed: "I'm not appreciative of it in the moment. He hit a home run off me, I'm not super happy. But he's going to be a HoFer so it's pretty cool to be in his book, I guess."

Blake Butera said Harry Ford left the game early with a left hand/wrist injury, but didn’t have many details on the diagnosis. Should know more tomorrow.

FINAL: Nationals 4, Angels 3. Washington came back late with a three-run eighth, capped by a two-run double by Jorbit Vivas. Cade Cavalli struck out nine. The Nationals snap their seven-game losing streak.

Cade Cavalli allowed back-to-back walks in the seventh and then a RBI single to Christian Moore. His evening is over, but Cavalli was excellent. Only allowed three hits allowed, but ran out of gas in the final frame. Angels lead 2-1 and Will Dion will enter.

Cade Cavalli vs. Mike Trout: 1-1, HR, HBP Cade Cavalli vs. the rest of LAA lineup: 0-14, HBP, 8Ks Feels like Cavalli is finding himself in an 1-2 count in every at-bat and isn't wasting pitches to get outs. Continues to be sharp.

The Nationals have parted ways with executive director of medical services Harvey Sharman, per source. Sharman had been with the Nationals since 2016. @markzuckerman.bsky.social was first with the news.

Mike Trout took a 3-2 cutter from Cade Cavalli just off the plate and launched it into the center field seats. Washington trails 1-0 just two batters into the game.

FINAL: Red Sox 5, Orioles 0. Craig Albernaz stuck with Chris Bassitt in the sixth and the gamble didn't pay off. The larger issue: Baltimore hasn't scored a run in 18 innings.

Andrew Golden @andrewgolden.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
A two-out, two-run double from Isiah Kiner-Falefa has blown this one open. It's 5-0. The Orioles' offense hasn't scored in 15 innings.

Chris Bassitt loaded the bases with a walk and Craig Albernaz came out of the dugout. After a lengthy conversation, Bassitt stayed in the game. Eli White hits a bloop two-run single and the Red Sox lead 2-0. And here comes Albernaz to get Rico Garcia.

Blaze Alexander just made back-to-back incredible plays at second base ranging to his right and then throwing across his body. Then, he did the Dikembe Mutumbo finger wave. Chris Bassitt is through five scoreless innings.

Andrew Golden @andrewgolden.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Nothing going for either offense, O's or Red Sox, through the first three innings. Baltimore did have a runner on third with one out in the third, but Blaze Alexander hit a grounder to third and Boston nailed the lead runner at home.

FINAL: Rockies 3, Nationals 1. Andrew Alvarez pitched well enough to win but Washington's offense scored just one run. The Nationals have scored four runs or fewer in nine of their last 11 games.

Andrew Golden @andrewgolden.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
A wild pitch from Andrew Alvarez allowed Jordan Beck to score from second base after Brady House was called for obstruction. It looked like Beck reached his arm out to touch House, but regardless House was in his way. That's the end of the line for Alvarez. 3-1 Rockies.

Andrew Golden @andrewgolden.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
The bad news is Andrew Alvarez allowed a RBI double to Connor Norby that extended the Rockies' lead. The good news for Alvarez is that Norby was thrown out at 3rd. Alvarez has thrown 64 pitches through four, struggling a bit with 4SFB and CB command (chart below)

Daylen Lile just hit his second homer in as many days and cut the Nationals' deficit in half. Showed good patience in his first at-bat, too, working a six-pitch walk. Rockies 2-1, bottom 4.

A solo homer from Hunter Goodman gets the Rockies on the board in the top of the 4th. Andrew Alvarez had allowed two base runners through the first three frames before that homer. Rockies 1-0.

Terri Metzger’s Adley Rutschman all-star jersey arrived two weeks ago. She planned to wear it to Tuesday’s game in hopes he’d sign it. Her husband Dave: “Now, we got to go to Boston.” On the O’s fans who processed their feelings a day after the trade:

Logically, it would make sense for the Nationals to trade Foster Griffin on an expiring contract and acquire talent for the future. But you can’t predict how many chances you’ll have to win in the future. My case to keep Griffin:

The Nationals should not trade Foster Griffin, even though it makes senese
COLUMN | Rebuilding teams trade valuable players because that’s what they are supposed to do. It makes sense. In some ways, it feels inevitable.

Tom Cosgrove entered for Zack Littell and faced three batters. The results: single, walk and sacrifice fly. The Diamondbacks lead 3-2 and Orlando Ribalta will enter. Before that, Littell did everything the Nats could've asked. His splitter, in particular, was effective.

Foster Griffin's whiff percentage on the year is 24.8 percent, just below league average. Today, it's up to 48 percent (11/23). He's through four scoreless innings. Two hits and six strikeouts. Everything is working tonight, and it has for most of the year.

CJ Abrams' RBI sacrifice fly in the third is significant for two reasons. 1. It gives the Nationals a 1-0 lead. 2. That gives Abrams a career-high in RBI. The Nationals have made Spencer Arrighetti work so far. He's already up to 60 pitches through three.
