Me walking into the #Phillies media room for the official Dave Dombrowski extension presser:

UPDATE: Following Week 5 of the college football slate, the #Illini Illini are now t-88th in FBS in Red Zone TD conversion rate (60%), and t-129th in overall red zone scoring rate—TDs + FG—(67%), in 2026.

Definitely at least fear of LOOKING incompetent. Could be your suggestion if he does actually know he’s incompetent.

Any loss that wakes up Jeff Lurie and Howie Roseman to jettison Nick Sirianni is a good loss. #Eagles

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And because Nick Sirianni didn’t take the points, he needs a touchdown with a minute left, and a FG won’t even tie the game. #Eagles

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Usual Story: Eagles offense—often by top-down design—lets the Eagles defense down, keeping them on the field the entire second half. Eagles defense gets blamed for being human beings with muscles that get tired, and lungs that get winded. #Eagles

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Wife asked me why the Eagles didn’t take the points. I just said, “Nick Sirianni is Head Coach.” Nick Sirianni is overly aggressive when you need to be conservative, and overly conservative when the reward of aggression outweighs the risk. In all cases, it’s driven by fear. #Eagles
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social posts on Bluesky on November 16, 2026:

“[Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni] has two gears:
Succumbing to fear, and falsely advertising to people that he's not succumbing to fear.

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Man, I hate going into halftime with double-digit leads. I’m worried Nick Sirianni will turn off his OC’s headset now and say he wants Vic Fangio and this defense to take all responsibility for the next 30 minutes of football. #Eagles

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
UPDATE: Rams just scored. Sucks to have to say this, but it’s better for the Eagles if LA stays in this game. Then Nick is more likely to just make his own bad decisions as head coach, and not start making bad decisions on play selection and design on behalf of his OC.
000
K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Birds just took a two-score lead with 5:44 left in the second quarter. It typically feels like Sirianni turns his OC’s headsets off at halftime with that kind of lead. Wonder if that happens sooner, considering the weather.

They reported back to locker room with hammy. He was basically hobbling back from wall to sideline after his run when I (over)reacted, so I’ll take a hammy over what I first erroneously thought in live speed! #Eagles

I’m inclined to agree. I texted into The Drive 93.5 multiple times in spring and summer that I couldn’t predict a single win past UAB and SIU, and I still can’t. But good lord do I hope they find a way.
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social Bluesky texts The Drive with Kurtis Allen and Evan Stone on ESPN Radio 93.5 on July 20, 2026:

“I simply can't make a SINGLE prediction beyond UAB and SIU until I see how often Hauck rolls the 3-3-5 up to a 4-2-5 or 5-1-5 look presnap on early downs.”
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social Bluesky texts The Drive with Kurtis Allen and Evan Stone on ESPN Radio 93.5 on August 31, 2026:

“I can't predict a single win after the UAB and SIU games until | see more.
So I have no record prediction.”

Former NFL coworker texted and asked me a few hours before kickoff of the UAB game what I thought of the 2026 #Illini, and I’m hoping I didn’t ask too much. Just get to six wins, guys. Don’t care how it happens. Don’t care if it happens on the final week. Just get to six.
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social Bluesky - @bigdeff72 Threads receives a text from a friend and former coworker with the National Football League on September 3, 2026, hours before the first game of the season :

“Time for some [University of Illinois Fighting Illini] football! What are your thoughts on them for the season?”

Deffley responds, “…I have no idea what to think … just don’t miss a [bowl game] that’s all I ask.”

Hey @jwerner247.bsky.social and @mrwagner25.bsky.social of Illini Inquirer, here’s some longitudinal research on Barry Lunney’s Illini career, analysis, and a key takeaway from Big Deff if you wanna use it!
010
K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Hahaha Barry Lunney is like, “Put Jordan Anderson in. Hand off to Jordan Anderson. No one will see it coming!” #Illini I just have to laugh. Remember when we all thought Lunney was getting fired midseason 2023 partly bc he COULDN’T send Isaiah Williams in jet motion without giving him jet sweep?
On September 26, 2026 at 2:55 p.m., K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social texts a friend after a telegraphed play against Ohio State, “Why can’t Lunney put Anderson on the field without giving him the ball”

On October 3, 2026 at 6:26 p.m., after yet another clunker by Barry Lunney against Purdue, Deffley simply texts his friend laughter emojis in reply to his previous tweet asking why Barry Lunney is so predictable with Jordan Anderson.

Key takeaway from this analysis: #Illini are one of just two CURRENT B1G teams—UCLA the other—to REACH the Red Zone at least 200 times since Week 0 of 2022 (again going into Week 5 of 2026), while converting fewer than 60 percent of their Red Zone opportunities into touchdowns during that time.

2/2 #Illini 58.5% clip (thru week 4) ranks 14th out of 18 CURRENT B1G teams in TD rate. Among these teams, that COMBINED red zone TD rate in that span is 64.2%.
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social Bluesky, creates table with combined sourcing of cfbstats.com and teamrankings.com data.

The table shows Illinois Red Zone touchdown rate of 58.5% since 2022 (until end of Week 4 in 2026) ranks 14th among all current 18 Big Ten Conference teams’ combined rates (including Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Washington, who joined the conference in 2024).

1/2 #Illini are 1-for-2 scoring TDs at halftime with their Red Zone opportunities today. At last week’s end, Illini were t-74th in FBS on RZ TD Rate (63.6%), and t-124th in all Red Zone Scoring (72.7%) 2026. ILL offense under Barry Lunney has 58.5% TD rate since 2022.
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social Bluesky, creates table with combined sourcing of cfbstats.com and teamrankings.com data.

It illustrates Illinois Fighting Illini offensive coordinator Barry Lunney scoring touchdowns at a rate of 58.5% in his Illini tenure at the helm of the Illini offense beginning in 2022.

Looked like an outside zone handoff and then a toss play behind gap blocking for the #Illini immediately when Valentine came out. You’re always welcome to prove me wrong, Lunney. Nice adjustment and thank you. 🙏🏻

Alright #Phillies pitchers, here’s a new move I’d like you to tinker with this offseason. Whenever JT pushes PitchCom buttons in your ear next year, try this:

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
2022 lost in World Series. 2023 lost in NLCS. 2024 lost in NLDS. 2025 lost in NLDS. 2026 lost in NL Wild Card Series. Do the Philadelphia #Phillies make the playoffs in 2027 (or whenever the next MLB Postseason occurs)?

Hey look… it’s exactly what we knew was coming since we saw the lineup card. #Phillies

K. Andrew Deffley @andrewdeffley.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Nola gave up 21 HR in 75.1 innings pitching to JT (2.5 HR/9), and 9 HR in 70.1 innings pitching to Garrett Stubbs (1.2 HR/9) in the 2026 regular season. That’s what worries me about JT as tonight’s starting C, but here’s hoping all goes well, not just for the #Phillies’ sake, but for Aaron’s.

Understand that botched play in RF was awful. But happy for Bryce that he could complete the B2B with with Schwarbs for a game tying HR. I undersfand when he frustrates fans, he frustrates me too at times. I just don’t get the abject hatred for him I see on social. Happy he had some redemption.

I love Alex McFarlane. But when your organization’s big, galaxy brain, 4D chess solution to an awful bullpen in the playoffs is a rookie with fewer than 20 regular season innings under his belt, that’s not a McFarlane problem. It’s a YOU problem. #Phillies

Here’s what I hope to see from #Illini D with Bobby Hauck gone. I believe this is all scheme-friendly, and some philosophies aren’t new, just need more. I wish the hire never happened, but I truly feel the upward pivot is possible with BH no longer killing this program’s momentum on the field.

To you and @mrwagner25.bsky.social’s conversation, here are #Illini adjustments I’d love to see (or see MORE/LESS of), that IMO, I truly believe are feasible and fit neatly within current scheme without major change:
K. Andrew Deffley - Big Deff - @bigdeff72 Threads - @andrewdeffley.bsky.social - provides iPhone notes for how what he wants to see from Illinois Fighting Illini defense the rest of the year with minor, scheme-friendly adjustments and additions, without departing from said scheme:

Organic Big Deff Fixes WITHOUT abandoning scheme:
* 5-1-5 penny look is a 3-3-5 package that they’ve already run (not enough) this year
    * 5-1-5 new primary front
        * 4-2-5 presnap adjustment with same personnel
        * 3-3 stack relegated to obvious passing downs
        * Only an adjustment WITHIN scheme, not a change TO scheme.
* More pinching TNT, more double-mugging A gaps, more run blitz from box on early downs
    * Extra show-and-disguise in addition to all actual blitz
    * Frees up your 7-9 tech OLBs for 1:1 and increases chances of free rusher
* Install split-field coverages that are scheme-friendly to 3-3-5 concepts like Cover 6.
    * Working this in can reduce predictability mitigate the Cover 3 shell and Cover 1 with CBs on an island that we’ve seen this year and has been reported as Hauck ball before he left Montana/joined Illini
        * Again, split-field coverages are happily harmonious with current scheme as an adjustment without major change

Hauck gone. WTF Bret doing studying/vetting these guys, interviewing them, & hiring them?? The day BH was hired, reports were readily available that Hauck lives in a) half Cover 1 with CBs on an island/half Cover 3 shell, with b) criticism of dropping 8 too often (Aaron Henry’s bugaboo). #Illini
