Good morning and welcome to White House Watch. We are
Steff Chávez, the FT's US defence correspondent, and James
Politi, the FT's Washington bureau chief. Let's get into:
• Shaky ceasefire
• Bessent and Reeves fight it out
• Little tariff refund hope
The already fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is on
even shakier ground after the warring nations traded fire
yesterday for the first time since they paused military hostilities
almost a month ago.

This strongly suggests, if doesn’t outright say, that this isn’t one of those cases where it’d be a war crime. Or there’s some nuance you, the reader, needs to grasp.
"Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all
wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like
it!!!" Mr. Trump wrote on social media. "Open the
Fuckin' Strait, you crazy bastards, or you'll be living in
Hell - JUST WATCH."
"Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!" he later added.
It was far from the first time in the past two weeks that
Mr. Trump has threatened Iran's power plants, which
tens of millions of Iranians rely on to power schools,
hospitals, residences and other basic aspects of civilian
life. Deliberate attacks on such civilian infrastructure are
typically a violation of international humanitarian law,
and in many cases can be considered war crimes.

Early Monday, Brian Kilmeade, the co-host of "Fox & Friends," of
which Mr. Trump is a loyal viewer, repeated the message three
times in two hours.
Twenty minutes later, the president announced on social media
that he was sending Mr. Homan to Minneapolis, a tacit
acknowledgment that he was losing control of a situation that
posed one of the most serious political threats of his second
administration.

Early September 1939 [Supplemental essay]
The foolish people are intoxicated by the German army's exaggerated
initial successes in Poland. Tales of atrocities of the worst kind are buzzing
in the air and inside the heads of the armchair warriors.' Certain regulatory
measures at home - in particular the introduction of food ration cards -
has somewhat dampened the assurance of victory. And those measures are
compulsory! Nevertheless, nothing has yet shaken the childlike faith in the
infallibility of the gods and demigods. What can one say when even those
who always formed opinions based on their own experiences now raven-
ously devour ridiculous gossip and asinine rumors - which have been
planted and purposely circulated - and then use such nonsense to prop
up the shaky image of their hero?

contemporary cases and policy debates to understand the opportunities and challenges technology poses to
traditional legal principles. This introductory course will serve as a foundational piece for further study of
intellectual property law. The course emphasizes critical thinking about the balance between innovation,

Sonnet 19: When I consider how my light is spent
BY JOHN MILTON
When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one Talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my Soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide;
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask. But patience, to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is Kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er Land and Ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait."

My favorite part about Trump loving Bloodsport (1988) is remembering the entire "based on a true" story was made up by a guy who bought a Halloween costume army uniform, said he was in the Marines, claimed he won the Medal of Honor, and was champion of a made up underground fighting tournament.
Military service and Medal of Honor [edit]
Contrary to his claims, Dux's military records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act show that he
never served overseas, that he has not been given the Medal of Honor or any other award, and that in
January 1978 he was referred for psychiatric evaluation after he expressed "flighty and disconnected
ideas"."||2|[3) Dux states that the military sabotaged his service record to discredit him.!?! A photograph of
Dux in military uniform shows service ribbons being displayed in an incorrect order, and the Medal of Honor
he is wearing is the version given to members of the United States Army, rather than the Marine Corps.
Questioned about the photograph in 1988, Dux told John Johnson from the Los Angeles Times he was not
able to get the military to explain why he was awarded a medal from the wrong service, 2] though in later
years he changed his story to say the uniform was just a Halloween costume.!21]

Obviously consumers feel the bulk of the economic incidence of tariffs, full stop. But who does he /think/ he is referring to here? Who is stocking up? Importers? Domestic importers?
Donala J. Trump 47
@realDonaldTrump
Despite the massive amount of money being made by the United
States of America, Hundreds of Billions of Dollars, as a direct
result of Tariffs being charged to other countries, the full benefit
of the Tariffs has not yet been calculated in that many of the
buyers of goods and products, in order to avoid paying the Tariffs
in the short term, "STOCK UP" by purchasing far more inventory
than they can use. That heavy inventory purchase is now,
however, wearing thin, and soon Tariffs will be paid on everything
they apply to, without avoidance, and the amounts payable to the
USA will SKYROCKET, over and above the already historic levels
of dollars received. These payments will be RECORD SETTING,
and put our Nation on a new and unprecedented course. We are
already the "hottest" Country anywhere in the World, but this
Tariff POWER will bring America National Security and Wealth the
likes of which has never been seen before. Those opposing us
are serving hostile foreign interests that are not aligned with the
success, safety and prosperity of the USA. They couldn't care
less about us. I look so much forward to the United States
Supreme Court's decision on this urgent and time sensitive
matter so that we can continue, in an uninterrupted manner to,
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Thank you for your attention to
this matter! President DJT

The details of the Community Worship Fellowship case will live on in my tax policy class -- an example of where the limits vis a vis tax exempt status for religious organizations seem to live now […] [Original post on esq.social]
To qualify for tax-exempt status, an organization must operate exclusively for
exempt purposes, and no part of its earnings can inure to the benefit of private
individuals. Inurement isn't a matter of degree; it's an on-off switch.
Community Worship Fellowship flipped that switch with gusto. Of the roughly
$1.08 million the church spent from 2013 to 2016, $933,000 went to the
founding family. The payments were made through handwritten checks,
reimbursements, and use of the church's credit card—which was managed by
the founder and his wife.

As NJ heads to the polls today, some things that will (hopefully) be front of mind for voters. news.bloombergtax.com/tax-insights-…
Ciattarelli's plan aims to appeal to high earners, and it comes with all the familiar
cautionary precedents. He proposes flattening the state's income tax, which
currently maxes out at 10.75% for those who make at least $1 million, to just
three brackets ranging from 3% to 5%. His plan also aims to reduce the
corporate tax rate by 1% annually over five years, which would make the
corporate rate brackets top out at 4%.
This approach sounds like the 2012 tax experiment in Kansas, where then-Gov.
Sam Brownback (R) slashed individual income taxes and exempted many
businesses from paying any income tax at all. The reasoning was that the state's
growth from becoming more business-friendly would offset the revenue losses.
