How could current scientific research into the climatic effects of nuclear war reshape US nuclear strategy? And how do institutional interests shape this brewing scientific debate? I wrote all about it in the latest issue of Arms Control Today, check it out! @armscontrolnow.bsky.social

People who entered the US legally and have no criminal charges are being held in the Everglades camp, according to records obtained by the Miami Herald. Maybe that’s why the government won’t release the names of those being detained. www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...

Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying. They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks. From WCVB: youtu.be/PuFIs7OkzYY

I fear the “Red Waves in Blue States” narrative will be used as a cover for some Democrats in places like New York or California who already wanted to direct state violence against vulnerable groups, like the homeless or the undocumented, in the name of “reclaiming a voter base.”

Now getting into the “why” of this voter drop off is much more complicated. What I think should *not* be complicated, though, is that we reject the misguided “Red Wave in Blue States” narrative because I am afraid it could be dangerous.

In my view, the takeaway is not that Donald Trump was substantially more popular in dark blue parts of the country than he was four years ago. Instead, in these particular states, my takeaway is that many left-of-center voters who came out in 2020 were not motivated to do so in 2024.

(I should add that the vote counts in some cases are not final but are unlikely to be substantially different from where they are now.)

Added together it seems Donald Trump added a little south of 275,000 voters in these five dark blue states combined (meh!), but Harris lost around **4,000,000** compared to Joe Biden in 2020 — to put that in perspective Trump won the popular vote in 2024 by about 2,500,000 votes

And in California, Donald Trump added a bit over about 100,00 voters compared to 2020, but Harris lost over over *2,000,000* compared to 2020

What seems to be the cause of Donald Trump’s rise in the share of votes in dark blue states is a massive drop off in left-leaning voter participation from 2020 to 2024. People in New York, California, etc. who came out for Joe Biden simply stayed home for Kamala Harris.

What is clear from the election data available is that Donald Trump only made marginal gains in the total number of votes in many dark blue states. These voter increases are even less impressive when you consider population growth since 2020. So why are people claiming some large electoral shift?

Where this article, and many like it, have gone wrong is that they compare the *share* of voters in dark blue parts of the country between 2020 and 2024. Looking at the *total number* of voters in dark blue regions tells a very different story. 🧵
