Here is what I had come up with a while ago: github.com/AndreasPK/na... Defines a bitfield as a list of flag names at the type level, and you can index/set based on the name. Don't look too closely at the rest of that repo if you want to preserve your sanity. But as I said, zero polish.

I wrote that sort of thing once, but when I went to use it I realized it was much easier to just have the dumbest possible thing like: setFoo :: MyBitField -> MyBitField checkFoo :: MyBitField -> Bool So I never polished it to a state where it could have been published.

Just move to rural Austria. That should buy you another 15 years. We still have restaurants that don't take cards.

I have a unreasonable level of dislike for the [RecordWildcards](ghc.gitlab.haskell.org/ghc/doc/user...) extension. NamedFieldPuns is great though.

Maybe our eyes glazing over when we have to read through irrelevant LLM output is a natural defense mechanism after all.

The GHC devs 5 stages of grief: * hadrian/build --freeze1 * rm .hie-bios * hadrian/build * rm _build/stage1 -rf && hadrian/build * rm _build && hadrian/build * Restart from a clean repo clone

I heard in a museum how in ancient Egypt the development of faster production methods that produced worse products lead to worse quality pottery or glass (don't remember) for a long, *long* time. I think of that often these days.

Weird thing about working on compilers: Sometimes you get really excited about a program segfaulting.

I think FP just defaults to transparent types while OOP wants you to default to "hide everything". Different pitfalls but not better or worse imo. Not being able to bundle getters/inspection functions with a type in Haskell is a shame though. I really enjoyed that about rust.

Working on different machines/containers. On my "core" environments I use ssh. In temporary or insecure environments I either don't bother to setup ssh or don't want to have secrets stored that would all someone with access to push to upstream repos.

I know everyone is shitting on GH for recent enshittification now. But I've always been annoyed by the need to select https/ssh/cli before you can copy the repo url. As someone who swaps a lot between ssh and https based clones this is so annoying.

I had forgotten about the crazy hardware prices. Then I found an old DDR4 ram stick today. 16GB. Think how much could that even still be worth. Seems used price is still ~50-80€. Guess I actually have to sell that thing.

In like structs or general? Some calling conventions expect stack alignment bigger than a word. Some SIMD operations require alignment to work at all or for performance reasons. Other things where you want to avoid fragmentation across cachline/page/whatever boundries.

I heard you like escape characters so I put some escape characters around your escape characters. Maybe I should have the logger convert win paths to unix-style paths just for the readability.

My eternal enemy is not remembering order within variables so it always ends up being a toss up between things like `AppError` and `ErrorApp`.

That's assuming you write code using those types in both languages. If they mostly just get passed around macro-like stuff is probably fine.
000
AndreasPK @andreaspk.bsky.social · 05/04/2026
I would probably use something that generates actual code files over macros. Tends to work better with language servers and the like. I'm sure all the ways to do this are hacky though.

Have to get up at 15 minutes earlier for an appointment. Wake up in panic at 4am, 4:30am, 5am, 5:30 am for fear of being too late and having overslept. Just give up and get up at 5:30 am. Day ruined.

I saw an add where someone added their dog into a picture with AI. Somehow all I could think of was someone saying "My dog has always been in this picture." But spoken with 1984 vibes. Will people frame fake pictures at home until and convince themselves those are real memories? I guess so.
