iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Sometimes a musician is your best editor. My composer father liked to tell me “not every sentence needs to be a Bruckner symphony.” I get it that this feels like a really niche criticism but allow it to sink in.

And another writing thing! Only ask for writing advice from people whose work you respect. Sometimes another writer isn’t your best bet.

Writing advice I’ve given today that may be nice for you to hear too: Trust “future you” to know what needs to happen next. I’m not a believer in outlines for fiction because to me that somehow prevents the magic from unfolding the way it should.

If you want to sound like a real prick use the word “numinous” as often as possible

Eulogy virtues (love, family, friendships) over resume achievements (career success) every MF time

From my dream journal last night, apparently: “And then one day you’re just up at 3 am watching a video about how to socialize a weasel.” (I do not have a weasel)

What if your purpose on earth was simply to chronicle the quiet moments the shitty moments the calm and horrific moments of the people you’ve loved best in this world

A colleague called to ask work advice. After an hour on the phone she said "This is so inspiring - you should write it all down." So I did. My latest hopefully optimistic career piece in the Los Angeles Times! www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...

Contributor: How to fail upward and build a career in tough times

I’ve been asked for advice by many recent graduates pessimistic about this slowed-down, historically tough job market. I can relate.

As we begin to gear up for the fight of our lives, something I’m learning to come to terms with is the idea that that old way of thinking… “When they go low, we go high…“ is simply no longer going to work. This is too big of an emergency.

If you believe that being joyful is also an act of resistance, which I do, that doesn’t mean you can’t schedule an HOUR a day to take this fight to the streets. One hour every day from now—> midterms. EVERYONE CAN COMMIT TO AN HOUR A DAY. Assess your strengths and get involved. One hour a day.

Proud to announce that New York City has registered a record 4,200 New Yorkers in our doula care program. Pregnancy and childbirth are life-changing moments. No one should be forced to navigate them alone.

Do you think Spotify artists ever look through their analytics and wonder who the (apparently deeply) unhinged person is in Lawrence Kansas who has listened to their song like 486 times in 2026? 🤣

My late mother was an ambitious cook with eclectic tastes that forced us in those pre-Internet days on day trips to Kansas City to locate the more obscure spices her Craig Claiborne cookbook required. She had replaced Roman Catholicism with Craig Clayborne and never looked back.

(Cont) Same goes, really, for “venerable.” Which doesn’t make tons of appearances these days with its low whisper of Edwardian manners

When you hit 56 you have to sort of accept the fact that it’s probably a little late to do anything that will allow them to place “redoubtable” before your name in the hometown newspaper obituary.
