Given injury circumstances et al, this is my #CanMNT 26 for the World Cup. Canada has reached the point where some good players will miss out as the talent pool has grown. Also, this is not an implied starting XI, but could be depending on the opponent & player availability.

This is how I foresee the #CanMNT lining up tomorrow afternoon for their game vs Iceland. - Saliba & Choiniere in for Eustaquio & Kone (suspended) - Cornelius returns; Davies, Bombito & Johnston still miss out. - DSC surprisingly get the start this match Arguably 🇨🇦's strongest healthy XI for now.

Niko Sigur🇨🇦 put on a clinic as RB in Hajduk Split's 2-0 win today. He'll play a role w/ the #CanMNT this WC, but where? * an assist * 53/57 (93%) passing * 4/5 successful dribbles * 2/2 tackles won * 2 interceptions * 3 clearances * 7/13 ground duels won * 1/1 aerial duels won

With the European transfer window now complete I have again updated the #CanMNT player depth chart. With Canada now rated for several months inside #FIFA's top 30, the team's pool of players has come to reflect this new reality. 🧵 1/2

What's at stake for the individual #CanMNT players in the match vs Guatemala to wrap up what could be the final Camp Poutine held? (It's conceivable an identification camp for CPL players being held in the future, but it is not likely any time soon.) My take below ⤵️

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 17/01/2026

My take on the starting XI for the #CanMNT when they face Guatemala on the 17th. This assumes 6 substitutes permitted. Starting XI likely to blend experience with uncapped players, too risky to finish the game with all uncapped/inexperienced players. This may be the last Camp Poutine as well.

A month out from Olympic hockey rosters being announced. Here's the 25 man roster lining up for Canada if it were my decision. I would expect to see all skaters lace up for at least one game. #TeamCanada, #CanadaHockey, #OlympicHockey, #GoCanadaGo

How I'd like to see the #CanMNT line up tonight vs Venezuela. 🇨🇦 hasn't scored since Cornelius' wonder set piece goal vs Wales in September. Marsch will start Tani but it's time give Promise a run. Also, Choiniere at LB more closely approximates Millar or Ahmed's playing traits.

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 20/08/2025

With less than 3 weeks away from Canada's next match vs Romania and 7 weeks removed from the disappointing run at the Gold Cup, an update & re-evaluation of the #CanMNT's roster depth was due. More than enough time for the bitterness of the the summer's result to wane. 🧵 1/x

My guess at how a heavily rotated #CanMNT starting XI vs Côte d'Ivoire might appear. We know Larin captains the squad, but I also expect Oluwaseyi up top over Jebbison, who is likely to come in off the bench at some point. Either of the 2 Davids could see limited minutes as well.🧵1/x

With Nathan Saliba reported to have come to personal terms with Anderlecht, the odds of his move from #CFMTL seems closer than ever. Who will fill his void? A prospect like Gabriel Pellegrino who's on an expiring contract with Freiburg? A #CanPL prodigy like Khadim Kane? Montreal has no MLSNP team.

Tajon Buchanan 🇨🇦 came on as a substitute to see out Villarreal's 4-2 victory, picking up a yellow for his efforts. Villareal remain 5th in La Liga and securely in the final Champions League slot. #CanMNT

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 03/05/2025

Jamie Knight-Lebel🇨🇦 had his 1st start at CB for #CreweAlex in a month in their now meaningless final match of the season. JKL went 85 minutes in a 1-0 loss. With news of Moise Bombito's wrist injury threatening his Gold Cup participation JKL may feature more prominently for the #CanMNT this summer.

#afcwimbledon wins 1-0. For Owen Goodman🇨🇦 it's his League Two leading 21st clean sheet (tied with Matt Macey). He also finishes with a league low 0.76 GAA, and a 73.6% Save Percentage, good for 4th best of GKs with a minimum 30 s starts. Promotion Playoffs vs Notts County up next. #CanMNT

If I were #CanMNT coach Jesse Marsch, this would by my XI to start Sunday's consolation match vs the #USMNT. The usual suspects start again with the exceptions of Cyle Larin and Derek Cornelius. 🧵1/x

The #USMNT has released its NL roster now, but still awaiting the #CanMNT roster to be released.

So Mexico has released its roster by the CONCACAF due date (yesterday, 10 MAR) but no sign of the #CanMNT roster yet. Curious as to the reason, ie. did Canada Soccer get an extension to sort through injuries etc? Here's Mexico's roster⤵️

Given this speculative #CanMNT roster here is my take on the 🇨🇦 starting XI vs 🇲🇽 on March 20th. It'll be the usual 4-4-2 shape but looking more like a 3-4-3 in attack with more of the play moving down the left flank with Buchanan & Davies. Larin starts this one from the bench.

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 10/03/2025

🧵Jesse Marsch has to submit his 23 player #CanMNT roster to #CONCACAF by the end of day today. He's dealing with a plethora of injuries on the left flank, and, suddenly, plenty of choice at striker. Here's my take on what the squad might look like given the above. 1/x

The #CanMNT player pool is due to expand with this week's news of Promise David filing his one-time association switch from Nigeria. Here is an updated chart of 🇨🇦 squad depth. Again, this chart was inspired from @benwright's similar chart created for the #USMNT last fall. 🧵 1/x

It's been a week since Roberto De Zerbi announced 🇨🇦Ismael Kone's planned departure from OM Marseille, yet there's been no solid news from the club about a deal. However, Kone is reportedly not training with the team either. #CanMNT

Promise David 🇨🇦 pots his 6th league goal (10th in all comps) for #RUSG. This time it's from the penalty spot. It's no longer a question of if he gets a #CanMNT call-up, but when. Should be a lock for the Gold Cup but a call for March is not out of the question.

Rangers beat up on Celtic. In a very un-Celtic performance, the SPL leaders get smoked. Few teams win them all, but this was a clear demonstration of why possession alone does not win football matches.

000

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 31/12/2024

GK Owen Goodman 🇨🇦 made 3 saves enroute to his 10th clean sheet in 22 matches so far this season. Goodman has allowed just 18 goals & boasts a save pctg of 71%. Hopefully #CanMNT coach Jesse Marsch is tracking & speaking to the 21 yr old prospect. A Gold Cup invite would be warranted.

And so the #TFCLive coaching carousel continues to spin. Who's next, Vanni Sartini? Bobby Smyrniotis? This club just has no stability anymore.

Andre Schaffner 🍁 @andre-s89.bsky.social · 25/11/2024

Could Chimere Omeze have earned an invite to the #CanMNT's 2025 Camp Poutine? While the January camp has yet to be confirmed, Omeze has made some noise at Syracuse University and deserves a look by Jesse Marsch. 🧵 1/x

While Jesse Marsch hasn't regularly deployed a 3 man back line since his RB Salzburg tenure, it's a formation I'd like to see the #CanMNT use against teams that are expected to hunker down against 🇨🇦. A true 6 allows more advanced MFs to better pressure a low block in possession & without. 🧵 1/x

My favourite work of Tom Thomson. Not sure why, it just is.
