“Nah, screw ensoulment, let’s hear from Oxford, or Berne, or Harvard on morality”? Yeah, I’m down. But don’t give me a warmed over Fantastic Four plot line from a guy with a signed forst edition Tucker Max

Ensoulment is a fundamentally religious question, and I have no idea why anyone wants to hear about it from a bunch of computer scientists in Berkeley I’ll accept if you ALSO dont want to hear about it from Rome, but it’s insane to trust the guys steeped in Stargate over the guys steeped in Aquinas

The root of Opus is op-, which Midwesterners use to announce their innate superiority and demand that you give way, every time they need to sneak right by ya. (this is not a shitpost)

There is no clear answer because there is no clear answer. I’m more than happy to tell you that most of the language processing tasks the frontier models do takes a lot of human correction and that’s usually not worth it. The AI skeptics keep trying clear answers that are demonstrably inaccurate.

I thought we on this website all agreed that concerns around torturing AI was stupid, but it probably says something about the folks who think it’s a good idea to torture an AI.

Actually, this is quite common for folks who enjoyed their Dune 2 commemorative popcorn bucket.
Tweet saying “babe, are you ok you’ve barely fucked your Dune 2 promotional popcorn bucket”

The promo bucket has a s”sandworm”
“Mouth” with lots of little spikes and a hole.

Data centers don’t use sanitary sewers. The alternative, I suppose is no development. I grew up in the rust belt. I genuinely don’t think that’s better.

Here’s the first word about the post that started this thread: Data center construction has migrated to places of low resistance: poor, often Black areas where corrupt deals are commonplace Now we’re worried about the $800k house someone bought next to an industrial plot?

AndersOSU.bsky.social @andersosu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
If the data center will be powered by on site turbines, that would be a real problem. This is the problem with the data center discourse. It’s all throwing arguments against the wall. Most of them suck. The few good ones (mostly related to power) get diluted.

AndersOSU.bsky.social @andersosu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Wastewater management for data centers in the black belt is not a serious argument. Your wastewater problems are from pig shit and sanitary sewers. Aesthetics do matter! But we need some industry somewhere, and it’s going to live in big nondescript concrete boxes.

When I take my kid to baseball practice literally in the shadow of a data center, the normie view (here meaning white collar government contractor) seems to be primarily driven by aesthetics and general AI skepticism.

AndersOSU.bsky.social @andersosu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It’s complicated! County got $800 million in revenue last year from data centers. That translates directly into better schools and lower property taxes. But construction is booming, and public opinion is shifting. There’s a lot of glonzo stuff going on and some real issues.

AndersOSU.bsky.social @andersosu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
No, not confused. If you’re going to make the argument that we’re foisting data centers on our poorest, you have to grapple with the fact that the highest concentration of data centers is in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.

Man — I’m sympathetic to environmental racism arguments, the story opens with sewage contamination so severe the UN took notice and I’m supposed to believe that a large warehouse is not only not an improvement, but the breaking point? Also, hard to square with Loudoun county’s median income, $182k

I just don’t think restricting suffrage will lead to a more liberal society. I don’t see how you disenfranchise the dumb white hick in AL without disenfranchising more black folks in Philly I really don’t see how you disenfranchise the owners of car dealerships w/o disenfranchising history majors

Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote _the_ piece on this back in 2015. I’m due for a reread, but the long and the short of it is that if we want to reduce mass incarceration (we do) we have to let some people who have done actually bad things out of prison. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Do you know if anyone is writing about this and talking about China? Because it seems that while the weird cult in Silicon Valley is talking about how they should be allowed to collude, China is simply juicing their (good, open) thinking machines without the existential angst or group sex.

Green energy subsidies were always a means to an end, a seemingly necessary stop gap. Only Donald Trump had the foresight to realize that we can phase out green subsidies by simply making fossil fuel more expensive.

Perhaps these are people whose last party invite was for Bobby’s birthday with the bounce house, when Mrs. Snyder insisted that no one from the class would be excluded, and they just thought that there were always children at parties?

The Bay Area lends itself to a sort of academic racism untethered to either the perpetrators or victims of racism. You can get “educated” on the Bell Curve without having to sully yourself by talking to the real estate broker who casually drops the n-word or the kids from post white flight schools
