Lower two thirds: A drawing of a medieval town. In front: The upper body and head of a woman wearing a wimple, a shirt, and a short-sleeved overdress. Her face is turned halfway to the right. I need to go with sensation, no sensational to be had. Still working on the translation of this one! #TheBardsOfThurán #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Earlier, when she had been speaking, she had pulled back her hood and dominated the entire room with her amazing eyes. Now, she sat very still, her eyelids half-lowered, and seemed to be far away with her thoughts. But he realized that she was listening, to the guests talking, telling their own stories, or discussing issues. He had the weird sensation that she was listening not only to people's words, but also to their thoughts, and suddenly felt very uncomfortable, as he had when he first looked into her eyes.
Her gaze lifted, her eyes met his, and he hastily turned away.
"Don't be afraid, kid," he heard her soft voice. "I won't hurt you if that's what you fear."

Do I have steps!!! First time Marek meets his uncle who is not happy to hear about a nephew... #FridaOfHamelin will go live tomorrow!! #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Take your hands off my boy!" Dietrich thundered so loudly that Marek jumped in fright.
"Dietrich?" Frida frowned.
"Now!" he snapped.
Marek stumbled back a step, but Lutz looked at him in amazement.
"Who is Svanhild?"
"My mother," Marek croaked. He had suspected that she was not well regarded by her family, not after what she had done, but he had hoped...
"Lutz! We're leaving!" Dietrich hissed. "And you rabble, stay away from us! Leave town, today!"

I didn't think I had one, but I did! Quite short for spoiler reasons: Vibrate #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Hurry, hurry!" the boy shouted who had dragged Marek out of his workshop. He was practically vibrating with excitement, and that – along with his message that Frida was urgently waiting for him at the market – had sent Marek into a state of semi-panic.

Original(ly)... Marek is about to make a mistake. #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"It's best for everyone, I think," he said.
"I see." Frida cleared her throat. "Have you told the count yet? Oh, he's not here."
"His squire is here, Ludwin. And no, I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'll do it once Pentecost fair is over." He didn't know why he had added the latter. It had happened spontaneously, unlike what he had originally planned.
Her gaze flicked up to him and dropped again.
"There will be far too much to do over the next few days," he added weakly.

There's no royalty, no kings or queens in this story. All I've got is an imperial count. #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
A man in his thirties stood close by, his hands resting on a table, studying what looked like a map.
"Graf Nikolaus," the servant said. "I have the shoemaker."
Nikolaus von Spiegelberg raised his head. His black hair was tousled, but his eyes were friendlier than Marek had expected.
"Ah, good," he said. "Ludwin was very impressed with your work – what is your name?"

Exactly twice "option" and it's both in here. Marek does have that third option, even though Frida doesn't like it. #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
But Frida just laughed. She really did have a wonderful laugh, warm and full, coming from deep within her.
"It is not true! And how many times have I told him that! He just doesn't want to listen." Her expression darkened. "You have to let the nasty words roll off you, Marek. I know he doesn't want to listen to you either. You have two options: confront him or ignore him."
"I have a third option," he objected. "I could leave."

11 instances of gentle, and this is the first. Very early days for Marek at Frida's workshop #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Marek." Her fingers pressed lightly into his muscles. "You can look at me. I understand grief."
Almost against his will, he complied with her request, well aware that his eyes were overflowing.
Her tone became very gentle.
"It'll be all right, my boy. Maybe it was just the shock that made him say those things. Now, put that awl away. It's getting dark, we're closing for the evening. Tidy up here while I prepare supper. And in the next few days," her hand pressed his shoulder again, "I'll visit my sister and ask her if she knows why Dietrich is so angry. All right?"

24 instances of offer and I decided to share this one. Marek's experience at the bathing house isn't a pleasant one. #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
He was grateful when the buxom maid approached him with a bucket.
"Shall I help you wash your hair?" she offered.
"Yes, please." He nodded.
And that was the right decision. Although her hands were quite forward too, washing not only his hair but also his back, shoulders, and chest, they at least remained above his waist. And pouring the bucket of water over his head caused Liese to move away from him after all.
No sooner had the maid finished than Marek fled from the tub – not only from Liese's hands, but also from Willibald's hostile words.
Oh mother, he thought dejectedly. What have you done to make them punish me like this?
But of course he received no answer.

I have to go with vibes again - Frida loves buying Johnmas bouquets #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Frida bought plenty. Marek, who accompanied her, carried her basket. It was still early, and she wanted to be prepared for Mass. Again and again she glanced at the sky, again and again she stuck her nose into a new bouquet.
"Mugwort, chamomile, and sage," the saleswoman listed. "Marigold, thyme, and elderflower. And Saint John's wort, of course."
"I'll take two," Frida decided, who seemed to be feeling particularly generous today.
Money and bouquets were changing hands when the bells began to ring.
"I think we have enough." Marek gazed into the well-filled basket.
Frida let out a guilty-sounding laugh.
"I know," she admitted. "I love the scent. And I love how the herbs fill the whole house with it. Often enough, our house stinks of manure, pitch, and smoke. Hans could always breathe better when Johnmas came around. But let's hurry. The stalls are closing anyway."

This is a tough one for a story set in a medieval town... We have to go with the vibe of document 😬 #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
The council master gave a brief nod.
"I come at the request of Meisterin Frida," he said. "And hopefully it will be quick. My house is in turmoil."
"Thank you for coming," Frida hurried to say.
"I thank you too," Marek added. "Everybody's here, right? Sir Gerhard, I think you may begin. I would also prefer that we resolve this as quickly as possible."
"I believe that," Dietrich grumbled, but fell silent when both the council chairman and the canon shot him warning looks.
"Council Master Gruelhot, Meisterin Frida," the old man began. "Like me, you are witnesses to the drafting and reading of the following document. It will, of course, be written in Latin and added to the town records, but I will take the liberty of translating the content into our language, as I know you are not proficient in Latin."

Enter the famous pied piper. Wake #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Indeed." Nikolaus snorted. "The piper promised to be good, but I didn't expect that."
"Some of them are drunk," Marek reproached him. "And none of their parents are here. You're not going to lead them out of town today, are you? They'll wake up tomorrow and wonder what they were thinking!

Got exactly one instance of dart! #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Money for the bathhouse," she explained. "Do you know where it is?"
He blushed. He blushed so quickly. Such a sensitive young man was no match for a boisterous Dietrich. Resentment welled up in her again.
"Near the fishers' gate," he said. "Why? Do I smell that bad?" The color in his cheeks deepened even more, and she had to stifle a grin.
"No more than usual," she replied. "Still, go and enjoy the warm water. Tomorrow is Johnmas." She winked at him.
His eyes darted around briefly before landing on her again.
"Aren't you coming?" he asked.
"To the baths?" She shrugged. "No, I'm only going with Gunda. I have to..." She trailed off.

No chance of "marathon" I went with race which is a poor substitute, but I don't have anything else that fits. #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
"Unfortunately, not all the cloth was ready in time because the fulling mill broke down," he grumbled. She remembered that Arnold had beaten him in the race for first place. This time, the smile came easily to her.
"The winter fair is coming up soon," she consoled.
"Meister Dietrich! Meister Dietrich!" A voice rang out and a man she vaguely recognized approached them. "There you are! I'm back from Paderborn as instructed, with news. Do you have my money?"
"From Paderborn?" Marek blurted out.
She turned to him in bewilderment. His face went pale, then bright red.
Dietrich noticed this just as she did.
"Oh, are you afraid of what my messenger has to report, scoundrel?" he cried triumphantly.

Happy St. Patrick Day! And a sad scene - Frida and her many graves #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Frida didn't dwell on it. Without hesitation, she made her way between the graves until she stood in front of a narrow row. Simple wooden crosses marked them, two of which were more weathered than the other two.
She knelt down next to the first one, carefully cleaned it of plant debris until the grass was green again, and then placed a small bouquet on it.
"Here lies Lenchen, my eldest daughter," she said.
He remembered. She had given birth to a delicate girl, and the subsequent pregnancy had robbed her of the milk she would have needed to get the child through the winter.
Frida was already at the second grave, which was just as carefully cleaned

Not as many as I feared! Repeat Marek talking to his cousin Lutz #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Lutz leaned forward.
"Did she truly travel around with the gleemen?"
He didn't know how to answer that. The travelers were not a particularly respected people among the settled, and yes, if he was honest, he didn't want to know exactly what his mother had been up to under their wing. Besides, Lutz might end up repeating that story elsewhere. His uncle certainly didn't need to hear that his father had met his mother when she had told his fortune from bones.
"Well?" Lutz pressed.
"She must have gotten from Hamelin to Minden somehow," Marek evaded. "She hardly swam the whole way."

"I just don't understand," he whispered, ignoring the mug. "It hurts so much. Everything hurts. Why is he doing this to me? Why does he hate me so much?"
"He's stubborn. And it wasn't intentional," she tried to reassure him.
It was no use. Another tear rolled down his cheek.
"He crippled me. Why?"
Frida took a deep breath.
"You won't be crippled. We'll follow Meister Jakob's instructions exactly, and everything will be fine."

recommend - Marek is asking to be accepted by Frida, shoemaker master in her own rights #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
The young man raised his head. Violet-blue eyes met hers and gave her pause.
"I wanted to see Meister Hans," he said in a rough voice. "I didn't know... My last master recommended him to me, said no one makes such fine shoes. He learned from him himself."
Hans had only had three journeymen in his far too short life, and she knew them all. She frowned.
"What was your master's name?" she asked.
"Gernot, Meisterin."

Fight - a continuous struggle between Frida and Dietrich #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
She carefully freed her hand.
"I don't want to fight with you, Dietrich," she said calmly. "But I'm not going to let you talk me into doing something I don't want to do. I love my work. What you're looking for isn't me. You're looking for a housewife."
"You were a housewife for Hans." This time it was he who stubbornly pushed his chin forward. She sighed. Gunda was right. A lot of water would flow down the Weser before Dietrich Wetdotmaker learned to give in.

This is perfect for the blurb! #FridaOfHamelin #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Hamelin, 1283/4 – Frida has buried her husband and children. Now she clings to the only thing she has left: her shoemaker's workshop – until Marek is forced upon her as a journeyman.
The young stranger is searching for his roots: his mother Svanhild once disappeared from Hamelin under cover of night. Frida can help – but Marek's uncle Dietrich reacts with a hostility that unsettles them both.
While Frida slowly finds her way back to life and Marek struggles for acceptance, a third person appears in town: Nikolaus von Spiegelberg promotes resettlement to the east.
Perfect for Marek, Dietrich thinks, especially since most of Hamelin's residents show little interest in the idea.
But then Nikolaus von Spiegelberg resorts to a trick...

“No,” he said curtly. It cut too close. “She taught me some when I was younger, but I forgot most of it… later on. Other things were more important.”
“But you do know how to read and write.”
“Indeed.” He smirked again. “I do know the difference between me and sin as well.”
“No offense, but I mostly associate obscene amounts of chocolate with sin.” This time, she smirked as well. “You don’t stand a chance in comparison.”
