1998 Marabunta (aka Legion of Fire: Killer Ants!) trailer. In this made for TV movie, a horde of deadly South American ants threaten Anchorage. The ants are defeated after the heroes blow up a dam (!!!) and drown the ants. #alaskahistory #alaska #realAnchoragehistory

No luck there, but it's a completed talk and am always open to giving it again. Seemed well received. Just need venues and people interested.

Circa 1961 Viceroy cigarettes comic strip newspaper ad. This strip features an Alaska adventure & the slogan, "You hear it from Alaska to Florida, a thinking man's choice, Viceroy filters." Which is more subtle about advertising to kids, this or Joe Camel? #alaskahistory #alaska

Once upon a time there was an Anchorage joke about spouses killing spouses: a Spenard Divorce. Inspired by a real cluster of wives killing husbands, but the context was worse. Learn what everybody was laughing about in my latest free talk. November 12 at the UAA Fine Arts Bldg

Insights into 1970s Alaska sex lives by cartoonist Bud Root, from the 1975 Alaska Pipeline Workers Handbook, an unofficial if high quality one-shot magazine that targeted newcomers to Alaska. Perhaps relevant, the editor and publisher were women. #alaskahistory #alaska

July 9, 1916, the funeral procession for the first known murder in the new town of Anchorage. On July 6, Russian immigrant Jim Kasoff killed Alex Takoff, a fellow Russian. It was quite possibly a case of mistaken identity. #alaskahistory #alaska #anchoragehistory

In 1960, Anchorage DA George Hayes said in court, "In Anchorage murder is not an uncommon thing...The value of life is not what it ought to be and what I hope it someday will be." I get annoyed at people who think crime is a recent import to Alaska. #alaskahistory #alaska

Aftermath of an August 24, 1976 shootout inside the Fairbanks police department. A man entered, started firing, and wounded 1 officer. Too many people think Alaska used to be safe, that crime is recent import. It wasn't new in pipeline era either. #alaska #alaskahistory

Development around Russian Jack Springs Park in Anchorage from 1960 to now. In 1960, you can see Nunaka to the east & Bonibrook to the south. Now the park is surrounded by development. From the 2021 RJSP Master Plan. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory #alaska

For Halloween, a costume idea from history. Here, a 1930s homemade mummy costume. In this case, I think the DIY vibe makes it creepier. #Halloween #halloweencostumes

Costume ideas from history. 1889 Duke Cigarette Fancy Ball Dress Costume cards. Very literal concepts. "The Kite" costume means you put a little kite on your head. "Light & Shade" costume means you wear a lampshade. #Halloween #halloweencostumes

July 10, 1980, President Jimmy Carter fishing at Clarence Lake in Alaska. He spent about five hours there. He caught 24 grayling, most with flies of his own design. He released most of them, but 4 were pan-fried on the spot for breakfast. #alaskahistory #alaska

Anchorage's International Airport in 1948, 1950, 1960, & 1980. Construction planned to finish in 1950, but regular passenger service didn't begin until Jan 4, 1952. The airport wasn't dedicated until late 1953, and its new tower wasn't completed until 1954. #alaskahistory #alaska

Anchorage's Rogers Park neighborhood is named after area homesteader Robert Rogers, but he called the land Mountain View. So, it would be historically accurate to tell people in Rogers Park that they live in Mountain View, to maintain neighborhood character #alaskahistory #alaska

Oct 9, 1909, the schooner Olga pushed ashore & wrecked by a strong storm at Nome. Until the seawall there was built in 1951, Nome was repeatedly wrecked by storms and fires, the peril of building on the golden beaches, as seen in second picture. #alaskahistory #alaska

Currently finishing up a presentation mostly about suicides, which were once rather openly, even gruesomely reported in Alaska. These articles are both from Anchorage, the first from 1921, second from 1948. If you think suicides were kept secret, that's not really how it worked.
