🌻 For my upcoming book, The Ecologies of Algorithmic Machines, I created a diagram that illustrates the different phases (and corresponding chapters) exploring the materiality of AI. Please feel free to share and cite it if you find it useful. I'd also welcome feedback to improve the diagram.

The AI industry is living beyond its means.

🌱 "The Ecologies of Algorithmic Machines" is almost ready. This book draws on over three years of research into the supply chains of AI, offering a historical analysis of its materiality and environmental-making regimes while challenging the dichotomy between nature and algorithmic machines.

According to my preliminary data analysis, UK data centers that signed the Climate Change Agreement were among the most polluting facilities, reporting more than 14 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions, second only to the plastic, food and drink, steel, and chemical industries combined.

Weizenbaum: [T]he teacher of computer science is himself subject to the enormous temptation to be arrogant because his knowledge somehow 'harder' than that of his humanist colleagues.[...] His knowledge is merely less ambiguous and, therefore, like his computer language, less expressive of reality.

Yesterday, 12 academics from diverse backgrounds and career stages gathered at @oii.ox.ac.uk to tackle a crucial question: "What does it mean to govern AI in the Anthropocene?" We reflected on the scale of digital infrastructure and explored which digital presents and futures lie ahead.

The main conclusion is that the data‑centre industry is designing compensatory projects in Chile and Mexico that are not delivering benefits. The forest in Quilicura has been abandoned, and the communities in Queretaro have not seen any of the 21 initiatives proposed being executed.

This paper analyzes two compensatory projects: the Quilicura Urban Forest by Google and Planning for a Better Quality of Life in Data‑Centre Communities by Microsoft and UN Habitat. To do this, we propose examining these projects from a patchwork, locally‑focused perspective.

🌱 Oxford introduces water restrictions while becoming an AI Growth Zone. DCs scaling up to 500MW which could use millions of liters of water. While we welcome measures in drought scenarios, we need better urban and environmental policies for balancing digital infrastructure with planetary health.
