🚨 New paper alert! 📄 Reduced evapotranspiration during Western U.S. #drought can alter atmospheric circulation locally and remotely, strengthening ridges, shifting storm tracks and the jet stream, and generating large-scale atmospheric waves #ClimateScience #Atmosphere 🔗 dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...

🚨 New paper alert! 🚨 The correlation between ENSO and Tropical Cyclone activity in the Pacific has strengthened in the recent decades. Meanwhile, there is a multidecadal oscillation in the ENSO-Atlantic TCs teleconnection strength. 🔗 dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...

Hi - I'd like to share this story of what is happening at NOAA GFDL, where some of my colleagues and I worked until the mass firings at NOAA last week. "...the birthplace of weather and climate forecasting"

I miss this! All memes aside, “I’m still here” is a great movie. Watch it if you have a chance.

The casing (white stroke) on the ’2023 and ’24 lines in this chart of Amazon River levels by @prinzmagtulis.bsky.social really help the recent record low measurements stand out from the historical data. www.reuters.com/world/americ...
Plot showing Amazon river levels from 2000–2024 at Manaus, Brazil. Data for 2024 and 2023 are highlighted in orange and blue, respectively. Older years are shown in light gray. 2023 and 2024 data have a thin white stroke to help them stand out from the other data.

There is a seasonal cycle with high water typically occurring in June, and lowest levels in November. 2023 levels were at a record low in October and November, and 2024 has been at record low levels since May. The Amazon was at 12.66 meters as of October 4, 2024, at the Port of Manaus.

Excited to share our new paper! We find that future changes in GhGs & aerosols drive opposing regional changes in TC frequency. Both increase TC intensity & rainfall, with GhGs boosting inner-core rain and future aerosols shifting rain to outer bands #ClimateScience link.springer.com/10.1007/s003...

The atmospheric effect of aerosols on future tropical cyclone frequency and precipitation in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model - Climate Dynamics
This study uses experiments from the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) to compare the influence on tropical cyclone (TC) activity of: (i) the atmospheric effect of aerosols under specified sea...

How do modes of climate variability affect the length of Atlantic Hurricane Season? - ENSO and Atlantic SST anomalies can affect the date of the first and last TC in the season. - TC season length may be extended in the future climate under La Nina and positive AMM Check out our new paper:
