Don't use the white foam made up of the little balls of foam together, those things crumble up. I also top off the straw with an old mil surplus wool cot blanket I use a clear silicon caulk around the inserted flower pot to hold it in place/weather seal it www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpG3...

this is pretty much what I do, and where I got the idea from but, I put more foam board on the sides between totes, and if there is room left over then I'll add straw also. I used to use the denim/cotton mix insulation boards (about same size as drop ceiling panels) but they got so damn exensive

I can remember years ago when firefighters would raise hell if they were told to start using new turnout/bunker gear and a new helmet, because they were afraid other firefighters would think they were probies and inexperienced. Not realizing all that crud buildding up was a health hazard

other lightweight things I keep in mine and suggest to friends, packs of LMNT electrolyte mix, single serving instant coffee pouches, beef and/or chicken bullion cubes. It will sound strange but for some reason, instant Nescafe is comfort to me, reminds me of staying with my grandparents as a kid

The heater we used was made by a Japanese company called Toyotomi sold in the US under the name Kero-Sun, we actually had 4 of them, one in the crawl space, one in the kitchen, one in the living/dining room, and one in the shop.

heh my childhood home, when it was built, there was no running water in town, everyone had a well/cistern. The water pipes in my house were automotive copper tubing, the kind used to run gas lines and brake lines, used the same flared fittings even the small inner diameter meant they froze fast

always drip both hot and cold water, not just cold water, hot water when it freezes will expand more and cause pipes to burst more than cold water

my preferred way of making my brats/peppers. Cast iron skillet, with a blend of ghee and pork fat, dump in diced peppers (mix of bell and poblano) sauteed until soft along with mushrooms. Pour in a bottle of lager, add the brats and cook. then brown them in a dry skillet to crisp the skin

Home from my walk, nice day at the park, people out walking their dogs, squirrels running around gathering acorns, I took a mixed bag of pumpkin, squash and sunflower seeds out for them, also took food for the stray cats that hang out by the shelter house. Now relaxing a bit before I fix supper.

creosote fires in chimneys are no joke, anyone that runs a fireplace/wood stove needs to keep up on maintenance. I've seen some really beautiful homes destroyed by chimney fires.

hehe go to a regional or state VFD muster sometime, you'll see a parade of rigs, both vintage and new, and you'll be able to see up close the difference in size, both in width and height. Also, if you every get the opportunity, go to FDIC in Indianapolis some year.

in stations that have been around a while, meaning 30+ years, like many inner city stations, and many smaller VFD stations, the truck bays and overhead doors to the apparatus bay were build for the smaller rigs that were used back then.
