It's always a delight to discover something new about oneself! Recently discovered that my trusty coffee weighing scale of many years is actually Scandinavian! This old flea market find from years ago is in fact a Mått-vågen Gullan, a classic mid century retro Swedish kitchen tool from the 50s.

In Denmark, the cats have already read the herding guidelines. A fascinating read. In Danish universities at least, compliance is presupposed rather than won through persuasion. No comment on whether I infer CBS is in the Danish sample :)

This is cool, and I wish them well. Notably, DAWO already runs on French and German components. Digital sovereignty is a shared European stack that's reliable enough for governments to run on. www.techspot.com/news/114018-... (More in Dutch at: tweakers.net/reviews/1533...)

A beautifully presented article, and the story of many organizations: the 'lower decks,' through sheer determination, absorb the incompetence and/or malfeasance at the top. The top takes the credit or dodges blame. If only our institutions didn't reward mismanagement so reliably. 1/2

Good but flawed set of alternatives; they often exist in isolation, without a broader ecosystem of tech, teachers, & habits. A fine start to diversifying your digital footprint. The more emancipatory move is away from Big Tech, toward a blend of open source/community-maintained tools.

Much of what we do in organizations is discretionary and relational, and never makes it into formal digital traces. When we try to automate the version of the organization we know from the traces, we miss an invisible glue, perceived only in its absence.

A small milestone: I just accepted my 10th journal review of the year (not counting 14 conference reviews) Peer review is one of the pleasures of the job. It is also my one indulgence in paper: I print every manuscript, and choosing the fountain pen and ink for it has become a small ritual. 1/3

The office of a tenure track assistant professor, with my name by the door. Something I have dreamed of, since I dont know, the early-mid 2000s maybe. And now it exists. Feels good. Havent quite made my mad (social) scientist mess yet, but I'll get there.

This is likely some form of selection/confirmation bias, but I’m hearing a disproportionate number of border horror stories from people attending the Academy of Management conference in Philly this year. Makes me sad to think that AOM is sullied like this. Oh well, to next year in Vienna.

Its also utterly fraudlent. A review by an LLM fined tuned by scraping published texts is in no way comparable to having the original author review the paper, not cognitively, not processually, no aesthetically.

Using an LLM-based app to do qualitative research is like using an RPG when you needed a scalpel. Its imprecise, and an unconscionable waste. For sampling, processing, summarizing, or surfacing themes, there are ALWAYS computationally lighter approaches than using a RAM guzzling behemoth.

A small statement of principle: AI augmentation should not be seen as a path to excellence. Excellence, rather, should be a pre-condition for AI augmentation. In knowledge intensive work, this is how we preserve rigor and reflexivity. Thank for coming to my TED talk.

Reflecting on recent experience with public sector bureaucrats and my latest field study: Discretion is anathema to automation, even the fancy “AI” version. In other words, situated judgement is very costly to encode. Safe: People who can productively bend the rules, and be recognized for it.

Why is it that the most fun part of the PhD (writing the monograph) happens at the same time as the least fun part (applying for a job)? One of life's little ironies.

I had similar thoughts when social media was emerging. Here is a doing that is being done at a massive social scale and there’s an essential quality check component that is missing.

This has implications for both the technical correctness and the aesthetic qualities of what is generated.

Anand Bhardwaj @anandwashere.bsky.social · 18/07/2025
Many (most?) genAI users cannot effectively evaluate what they have generated. It depends on the user and the task. But a good chunk of all genAl tasks are sufficiently specific to require expert or esoteric knowledge to evaluate.

A cautionary tale about genAI sycophancy. Treat it like a hotshot analyst. Especially one that produces exactly what you want, in record time. Impressive, no doubt, but requiring considerable oversight and real quality checks.

I'm curious to see how the annual meeting this year in Copenhagen will unfold. Will Americans show up? Will international scholars in America (who risk not being able to re-enter) do so as well? What about scholars in European universites? For some, Canada (e.g. ASAC) might offer an alternative.
