Paul the bass player/vocals is Secondo's son (although it's never brought up or even known by outsiders. Papa II is retired in the suburbs.) Erin the drummer is older and they played in the HS Theater orchestra pit together. Reunited as the other half of Horse Divorce.

Erin is a fat blonde girl with cropped bangs and a high pony, a tough as nails expression. She's putting on lipstick in her phone. Paul is shy, strong faced and covered in kiss marks. He looks confused but resigned to his fate!

I wanna get back into finishing Oversee Us. I got three written chapters and one comic epilogue left to work on. Then I can do my "masterpiece" of May June and Cooper Howard meeting 10 years after the bombs.

Howard whips out some furry bundle from his saddlebag, bringing it to his mouth. With perfect dark vision clarity May observes his teeth rend bits of dried flesh from a crumpled ribcage. Matted fur crushes under his grip and little paws flail as he rips meat from the roadkill.

May’s as close to speechless as a know-it-all can get. “What the hell is that?”

He shrugs. “Some kinda fuckin raccoon or something, hell if I know.”

“Oh my god you're a mess.”

“Got it’s advantages,” Howard snorts. “You want some or what?”

It disgusts her how much she's salivating from the smell. But Cherise’s serene face asleep on her shoulder makes her lower her hand. “I'm not hungry anyway.”

“Suit yourself.”

“Last time I saw you you were day drunk and using up all my fresh towels,” May snaps. “What the hell happened?”

“Well if you haven't been aware, quite a fuckin bit,” he says. “Barb. Janey. They're out there. Been almost ten years but they're still out there.”

May June the ghoul yelling at her annoying friend Cooper Howard who still pines for people she's convinced are gone.

Going up to Airport Mesa tomorrow morning. It's been fun returning to a place and doing some writing. Nearly a year since I started writing Oversee Us and 3 years since I last visited this region of the US.

“Airport Mesa, huh,” you change the subject. “And why’d they call it Airport?”

He's still agitated by your inspection of the J on his arm. “Why you think? Because there was a fuckin airport on top of it.”

“Oh.” Mystery solved.

“Would fly my Cessna out there. The studio would shoot B-roll of the rock formations.” As he starts explaining things related but not close to his life his voice relaxes and he pulls you in closer. “Most of my films got shots from around there. Was always a weird place. Felt weird. Itchy.”

“Why?”

“Something called a vortex. Some sort of geo-whatsit among the rocks. Been that way even when the natives lived there a few thousand years ago. Commie wackadoos went out there before the bombs fell.” Coop grimaces, and you feel the corded muscle in his chest tighten. “Thought the vortex would protect ‘em. Thought just thinkin’ happy thoughts about the human race would save the world.”

“That whole region of the US was mostly spared from the major ground zero areas. Which means a lot of it must still be intact!”

“And fucked up from the vortex,” Coop adds. “Nav impossible. Tech breaks down. Any outsider gets strung up by his entrails the moment he’s found.”

“Right…” You wince. “Who knows what two centuries of radiation stuck in a natural energy vortex could do.” To the wildlife. To anything. To anyone.

“And that's why…” He sits up, leaning on his knees. He turns slightly to look into your eyes with an expression of surprising softness. “And that's why I'm a fucking moron for bringing you there.”

I'm trying to figure out how to represent how they overlook the valley and see all the trees leaning to and fro, slave to the whims of the irradiated energy vortices of New Sedona

Rough sketch done in the back of a van while I go home from the canyon. It's Coop and 66 overlooking the valleys of New Sedona. Trees twist and lean in crazy swirls. Coop says "the whole place tellin us where to go."

There's something about the trees.

You turn in place slowly. The trees are short, scrubby, jumbles of dried up branches and pines. You've wandered past such trees for weeks. But somehow these all lean. They all lean, their branches outstretched like twisted arms in the same direction. Hundreds of trees, all bowed down nearly sideways and growing away from the towering red rocks. They're caught in some unseen energetic windstorm and you wonder how safe this place really is. You tap your PiPBoy screen, waking it. The green-tinged map flutters, flickers on and off. The Geiger counter emits a few cautious whines.

“The trees grew…strange…” You step towards one large enough to stand under and reach out your hand towards the trunk. The branches reach out but the twist exists everywhere. The texture of the pine bark is ridged like a pulsing muscle, a wrung out towel. For a hundred years at least this tree grew in circles, chasing a force you can barely detect.

“Didn’t notice, hm?”

The riled-up bark bites your skin and you think of those gnarled old hands and the shining black eyes of the Oracle. Of his wheezing breath and his dark portents. Something brewed behind his mask, like the sap flowed up these trees. He had said his blood ran red like the rocks, but did it flow in an endless roil, slave to this vortex? You pull your own hands back, shaking them off like a static shock.

Coop seems unfazed. He rolls the bike under the tree and settles himself at its base for a rest. “These usually a sign tellin folks they need to turn round and go back where they came from.”

“You've been here before?”

“Not this far,” he says. “And I'm not risking a nighttime wander. Dumbest thing to do out here is think you know the place.” He meets your eyes, then beckons you with a pat of his knee.

I printed out all my disjointed segments of Oversee Us' New Sedona arc, cut them out & glued them into scrolls with notes. I didn't realize how much of it was actually written. It's full of deep conversations, spiritual revelations and psychedelic encounters. The supervisor had to do his inspection.
