What feels like the best use ever of my #rstats skills, I made a #shiny app to organise my crochet granny squares 🧶 😂 Patterns are from granny squares academy 1 & 2 by Shelley Husband

At the recent Aust stats conference @bharrap.bsky.social showed me some cool ridge plots and I am very very amused (perhaps more than I should publicly admit) that predictive text turns ggridges to grudges.... #rstats #ggplot

Big day! Keynote at the Australian Statistics Conference in Perth, talking about my journey and future of stats in the age of AI. Feeling nervous but have my favourite dress on #ASC2025 #stats

how did I get this old and not know about reverse assignment in R? #rstats (arguably if I have lasted this long... maybe it isn't that useful!?)

I am not 100% convinced this is a general issue, rather than a me-issue, but anyways, it seems ok now!

Ok #rstats #shiny hive mind. When rendering geom_tile to a plotly in shiny, and press the download button the resulting .png is missing the tiles? What gives! Any advice gratefully received (These data are fake!)

Great to be back home after spending a week in Vanuatu teaching #Rstats to these awesome #fisheries managers, a wonderfully productive workshop. One participant was rendering her analysis written in #Quarto to a PowerPoint presentation that she writes annually for catch data in the outer islands!

Delving in to the world of Beaker St science festival. What is your p(doom)? Is AI going to save us, enslave us, or just write all our event descriptions? Even have “the krill” cocktail given my date for the afternoon!

TFW you log in to what looks like a fabulous seminar (Integrated Species Distribution Models: an application to fisheries abundance data, by Quan Vu, ANU) and find out you didn’t get the memo it started an hour earlier due to a room issue 😭

So the Statistical Computing and Visualisation section of the (wonderful) Aust #stats society are running “C study Group for R Contributors” atm. Having never ever ever programmed in C before I felt daunted!! Now I have made a function for Mario and feel overwhelmingly proud at my productive Monday!

On the topic of my PhD, I was interviewed recently about the time Clay DeGayner and I found the first Burmese python in Florida Keys, it had eaten one of the radio collared woodrats we were tracking. Had to dig deep in the memory, it was 18 years ago! (I’m still deeply scared of 🐍!)

I found an old file on my computer from my PhD, my thesis was (broadly) on detectability of woodrats, named “WR detection curse.jpg” and I was *very* amused 🤣

I’ve had the terrible experience of DVT lately, which among other things, has set of a chain reaction of doctors appts and specialists. Here is a pre-visit specialist survey form and it reminds me survey design is a whole profession for a reason #stats

These kinds of catchy statistics leave me with more questions…. Why swap from 2 in 5 to percentages, and what happened to the other 18%? Just find it opaque and a bit pointless. Space filler in the magazine #stats

This was fun, Ben and I went to the University of St Andrew’s Alumni “cocktail party” (generous description) in Perth (WA) tonight. Coincidence we were in town for their annual meet up! It was good fun, and view over Perth sunset was beautiful.

Base R using barplot is pretty ugly? 📊
000
Jo Potts @analyticaledge.bsky.social · 15/04/2024
Hey #rstats hive mind, I am trying to make a TERRIBLE bar plot to demonstrate how a non-zero baseline is extremely misleading, as the ratio of bar height does not match the ratio in the values on the y-axis. However, ggplot (rightly) cuts out the bars when the data range is there. Any hints? Base R?

Alas it hasn't, but I've gone down a rabbit hole of coords, to margins to aspect.ratio to now fixing layout dimensions directly via ggplotly(map, height = 900, width = 800) It's not terrible for a screen (can scroll down) but not flexible. Hopefully someone has better suggestion! TY tho :)

Bluesky #rstats #rshiny hivemind! I am making a #fisheries bycatch data explorer dashboard. When mapping where bycatch get caught, maps are squished! I'm using ggplot for the map, and then renderPlotly(). I thought it was an aspect issue but adding coord_fixed() doesn't help. Any hints please?

Anyone would be right to think I do a bit of abundance/spatial/density estimation work... on what? fisheries, seabirds, krill, bycatch, feral species, woodrats, cats! Bit of fun for a Friday!

Oh dear. Another day, another #rstats user falling in to a trap of using 'aictab' to compare AIC in model selection without realising the data sets for each model differed due to missingness. AICs are not comparable when your data sets differ! A friendly reminder :) #stats
