Been reading a biography of Isaac Newton and am totally enthralled with the excerpts of his notebooks that are printed in it. The guy just loved doodlin', and also was absolutely freaking it when he went off to college -- sticking stuff behind his eyes to make himself see crazy colors.

Excerpt from Isaac Newton's notebooks, describing an experiment he performed in which he put a pin behind his eyeball to make himself see colors. A diagram shows a small disembodied hand holding a pin and pressing it into a section view of an eyeball.

"I tooke a bodkine .. & put it betwixt my eye & the bone as neare to the backside of my eye as I could: & pressing my eye with the end of it (so as to make the curvature ... in my eye) there appeared severall white darke & coloured circles."

Excerpt from Isaac Newton's notebooks, showing devices he designed by which one could grind hyperbolic or elliptical lenses.

One of the devices includes a chisel held by a small disembodied hand.
