Ultimately, we must move towards a critical computer graphics. We should begin to recognize ourselves as making graphics technologies within a broader socioeconomic context and work towards a future which liberates all.

About 1/3 of SIGGRAPH technical papers were on generative models this year. Zero of those touched on social impacts. We open this conversation with a gentle intro to critical theory and critical platform studies aimed at graphics folks. Annotated slides: anadodik.github.io/publication/...

Charles Babbage intentionally designed the computer as an automation of mental labor. Today, computer graphics automates visual art production via privately governed generative models. How did we get here? Critical Labor History of Generative Models, SIGGRAPH Talks '26 🧵

I feel like you could make a fairly robust classifier of how old a SIGGRAPH paper is using the cost of ink required to print it as the only feature dimension.

There's no way this VAR thing is accurate enough to catch someone being offside with their knee, right? Almost certain there are no body pose estimators that precise in such uncontrolled conditions. Why aren't they integrating uncertainty in the estimates?

What would be a counter example that would convince you any animal could generalize knowledge, which cannot at the same time be explained by behavioralism? I am struggling to think of any.

Wish there was a way to donate the SIGGRAPH conference registration discount to help bring in more folks from underrepresented communities if none of the authors can make use of it. I have two that are about to go to waste :(

I haven't used it on code that I actually care about writing myself, I was really just trying to see how far "vibing" could get me. Not very far it seems. Maybe I was bad at it though, but it doesn't seem like a skill I want to improve upon :)

I agree it's good at that, it made a .clang-format for me and I didn't have to dig through those arcane docs! I did find something beautiful about people coming together to help each other with stuff, even if it got toxic at times :)

Been playing around with vibe coding for a few days and it really takes away any joy building software had. It's awe inspiring how quickly it can get something going, but after that point it's just a slog. Feeling depressed about the whole enterprise and the world broadly after the experience.

Puzzled by the trend in the humanities of picking and hyper fixating on one mathematical component of Gen AI and reading into it like tea leaves. In an attempt to demystify models, they mystify themselves with the math. Mathstification, if you will.

Big part of growing up as engineer for me has been realizing that any sufficiently large code base, even if written by world's best engineers, is inevitably held together by bubblegum, string and lots of good will, and that this is sometimes actually okay. [As always, exceptions apply.]

Applying instrumental reason to art isn't unprecedented in art history, DLSS follows an existing line of thought. But, to claim it was the prevalent approach in art history until modernism is ahistorical. (Plus yassifying existing art certainly seems different to studying perspective.)

Ana Dodik @anadodik.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
This DLSS stuff is what you get when you view art as a metric to optimize, when you reify the most human of endeavors into a force of nature to be studied, to be dominated. You cannot fix another person's art because art isn't a number in a table to improve upon.
