If you read AWS CEO Matt Garman’s unusual letter about why our nation can’t afford to lose the AI race, and you’re wondering what to make of it, we get that; it's trying to say F the haters while announcing a community benefit program that’s supposed to address some of the haters’ biggest concerns.

The Race Amazon Would Be Wise to Chill Out On

The wtfs: the race framework and cherrypicking risk, vagueness around average data center size, the decision to ignore gas, the idea that this is all a favor private industry is doing us, the lack of choice.

Another blue and green graphic: It matters because we've sparked real conversations with our co-workers. It's been an entry point to broader conversations about our concerns. Quote from an AECJ member & SDE: "It opened up conversations about our burnout from layoffs, unbackfilled positions, Amazon's connections with ICE, and higher expectations to deliver with AI. It feels really good to have real conversations about how our company is affecting each of us."

Blue and green graphic: it matters because we've started considering alternative paths. Data centers & AI can be built more responsibly, but we have to demand it. What if the workers building AI had a say in how the tech would be used? What if building new data centers required also building new parks and sustainable infrastructure? What if companies were held accountable to promises they make? Why shouldn't they be?!
