In VPR 58.2, @kyleeanneh.bsky.social traces reproductions of F.W. Burton’s 1840 watercolor “A Blind Girl at A Holy Well” to consider how #periodicals deployed its sentimental depiction of blindness in mid-century debates about Irish culture and nationhood: muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl... @rs4vp.org

In VPR 58.2 @amymatthewson.bsky.social examines how ILN repurposed images of China in its 1842 coverage of the Opium War. Learn how violent textual accounts were juxtaposed with tranquil landscapes to create a cohesive narrative about British military power: muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl... @rs4vp.org

Speaking of the Illustrated London News, a paper whose pages I never tire of turning, here's an account of its (mainly 19th-c.) history I put together some years back for the publisher Gale, which has made the essay free to access. It was fun to write. www.gale.com/intl/essays/... #C19th

This week, my class and I had the immense pleasure of chatting with Dr. Tore Olsson about history, video games, and his new book. We also had an in-class discussion about the women's suffrage movement as depicted in the game and in primary sources. Not my primary area of expertise, but so much fun.

Thanks for this, Vivien! Esther’s paper was indeed a fascinating exploration of ways of representing (and thinking about) temporalities in archival research

It's a big day! This intro took a while to put together, a lot of ideas, and lots of thoughts on itinerance while 'wandering and working' in some ways myself... plus I realise definitions are difficult and scary! I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts! DMs are open!

Hello new and old Friends, I’m new to the Bluesky community and would like to (re)-introduce myself. I’m a (mostly) 19th century historian interested in China in the British imagination. I look at visual and material cultures to explore a wide range of themes: knowledge, race relations, empire
