Out of the darkness unfolded a massive leg. Wynn remembered what Rawiya had told her before handing her the key. That the darkness was hungry. Rawiya hadn’t told her that it became what it had eaten. #horrorlit #booksky #speclit #writing #horror #amwriting #wipsnip

Ida pressed flat against a tree, her skirt and shirt melding into the bark. With her large, blue eyes framed in her heart-shaped face, she looked like a nocturnal bird of prey. A startled owl, a hungry nighthawk. “Be still,” Ida whispered. #horrorlit #booksky #speclit #writing #horror #amwriting

Architectural and Mechanical shenaniganery today in "How to Build a Haunted House." Thanks for these fun prompts @wipsnips.bsky.social ! #AmWriting #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WriteSky #WritingPrompts
“Maybe we should try therapy,” Oliver says, in lieu of any sort of greeting.
“Now’s not a good time.” She watches the mechanical winch lift the chandelier higher. It’s nearly to the three-story-high ceiling. “You know that.”
Marco escorts Jasmine and Destiny out, and Katya forces a smile and a wave to the couple.
“Will you consider it, at least?” Oliver’s voice quavers, as if he’s not sure he wants to know if she’ll say yes. The funk of their relationship woes hangs over her like a ghost. Why can’t things be as easy as they seem to be for Destiny and Jasmine?
Destiny mouths something as she walks by. Katya freezes for a moment. Haunted. Is that what she said?
Then Katya’s mind catches up, and she realizes Destiny was mouthing highlight. Highlight of her day.

“Lottie, what’s wrong?” The nickname pulled her smile down.
“I think we need to consider the future of the farm, Noah.”
He swallowed back the next joke and nodded. Pausing, he finally forced out what he had been thinking but hadn’t wanted to voice. “We might need to think about selling.”
“What?” The shock on her face wasn’t unexpected. The anger was.
“Lottie, I think, maybe….We just need to consider—something.”
The shift in her mood was a frost, freezing the room and the crops outside. “You’d just give up on all of this then?”
A thunderstorm swept through him. “What do you mean?”
“You’d just abandon what Mom and Dad built?” He tore out of the house before he said something to her that he’d regret later.
He slammed the screen door behind him and was halfway through the soybean plots before he calmed down enough to stop. Wincing, he lifted his boot off of a trampled plant and reached down to see if he could salvage the broken leaves.
The bean pods rustled, though Noah couldn’t feel any breeze. He leaned toward the plant but didn’t get too close; he didn’t want a face full of grasshoppers or moths. Somewhere in the distance—muted—he thought he could hear muttering. The burnt-bark smell of the bean plants made him a little dizzy, and he crouched lower to try to get the feeling to pass. The murmuring grew louder the closer he got to the ground.
One of the pods split open, and the voices tumbled out into the air, clamoring for dominance.
Instead of beans, the hull cradled rotten, shrunken skulls. They writhed and grunted, bumping into each other and shifting for space in the narrow bed. Skin stretched and tore as they groaned; muscle pulled taut and snapped, unhinging miniature jaws. He gasped, and the heads turned toward him. Clouded eyes stared at him, and the words grew in volume. If he listened close enough, they sounded like a television left on in another room, like if he paid enough attention, he would be able to make out what they were saying.
	Noah sho…

This #WIPSnip is from "All the Pretty Little Horses," which will be appearing in Illustrated Worlds Magazine Spring Issue 2025 #amwriting #WritingCommunity #writers #authors #WritingPrompts #WriteSky
Her computer flashed an alert, and she paused to open the app and download the videos. She wondered what had wandered by the camera the night before. Maybe a fox or racoon. Sam had even caught a night heron once on the mount set up overlooking the bay. Whichever camera had spied the unknown animal, Sam knew it wasn’t the bog view. She wasn’t even sure why Maya had set one up there.
Sam hadn’t questioned Maya’s sudden interest in nature. When Maya had set up all the cameras half a year ago, Sam figured she’d picked up a new hobby and tried to be supportive. Now, with Maya gone, she found herself continuing her wife’s tradition of checking the cameras every morning. Sam had always found the glimpses of wildlife interesting; they acted differently when they didn’t know someone was watching. Maya, on the other hand, always seemed dissatisfied.
“What are you looking for, then?” Sam had asked.
“Not sure,” Maya had answered, and then she had walked out four months ago in the middle of the night and disappeared. Dev — seven years old and barely able to walk to the bus stop on his own — had followed soon after.

And for today's #WIPSnips, an excerpt from the story "Finch's Daughters," a ghost story about those often ignored. #protectallnotsomewomen #amwriting #writingcommunity #writers #authors #writingprompts #writesky
Finch’s youngest had been found drowned in the clawfoot bathtub one morning after a particularly raucous party. The suspect list was long; the search for her murderer, short. A cold case from the start, the book said, with too many jilted lovers.
Evangeline thought of the bathtub and the feeling on her hand a few hours ago. She wanted the house filled with noise and warm bodies. It was hard to be haunted if you were distracted, she assumed.
“I think I’ll get the invites out soon. Should be easy to get the room done and the party organized by next month.”
Julia pursed her lips and set her own book down to stare at Evangeline. “You’re acting ridiculous,” she complained.
“And how, exactly, am I acting?”
“Like a rich bitch—and no one likes those.”
Seething but shamed, Evangeline remained silent and stood up. She was sure Julia would call her out on her tantrum, but she didn’t care at this point. Closing the book to put it back and leave, she caught the last sentence in Finch’s chapter.
The crime photos had been printed in the newspapers, unheard of for that time and society. But people had whispered that was the least scandalous thing Finch’s youngest had done and the least of what she deserved.
After all, hadn’t she wanted all eyes on her?

This #WipSnips comes from "Wood for the Trees," which appears in @gravesidepress.bsky.social's Soul anthology! #amwriting #writingcommunity #writers #authors #writingprompts #WriteSky
She saw the first hiker just as her campfire was starting to blaze. The boy appeared at the edge of her vision, the forest dark and creaking behind him, and leaned his head into the halo of light. She couldn’t make out more than the idea of his body — scrawny like a sapling — but his face was all too visible.
Red and blistered, skin pulled tight against cheek bones. His eyebrows had been singed off, his lips charred; he'd been freshly burned. But he didn’t seem to notice, instead staring at the flaming logs of her growing fire.
Mari startled to her feet, a choked hey slipping past strained vocal chords, and let her cooking iron fall to the dirt by her boots. The child looked up briefly, but his attention returned right back to the flames as they hungrily licked and drooled against the dry wood. She didn’t think he should be so focused on something so small, not on burning twigs, not when she thought his hair might still be smoldering. Though maybe it was a trick of the dark.

Today's #WIPSnips is from a story about buildings that become crabs. Because that is a *very* normal thing to write about. #amwriting #writingcommunity #writers #authors #WriteSky #writingprompts
They crouch under an overpass, attempting to catch their collective breath as Naomi rubs her swelling leg. While Amy curls over herself, Naomi opens her sketchpad as a distraction, the delicate pages somehow surviving what so many people haven’t. Amy looks over at the scratch of pencil on paper.

“My daughter likes to draw,” Amy says, in lieu of other conversation. She doesn’t want to talk about the lumbering buildings in the distance, doesn’t want to bring up Greg’s mangled remains. She doesn’t want to think about the constant rumbling beneath their feet, a heartbeat of the earth. “She likes a lot of the same things you do.”

Naomi glances up from her drawing. Her hand is trembling but the pencil seems steady. “Oh?” she offers.

“I don’t get a lot of what she likes.” Amy scrubs a hand across her mouth and shrugs out of her blazer. The back is sticky with sweat and dust. There is a stiff brown stain over one shoulder. She ignores it and ignores the way she is telling all this to a woman she’s never spoken to outside of work hours. “I think that’s why we don’t get along.”
