On May 2, 1843 a vote was held to form the Provisional Government of Oregon. McLoughlin did not attend, but he tried to rig the vote by influencing opposition to attend-but it was unsuccessful. The vote passed 52-50, dethroning McLoughlin and paving the way to statehood in 1859. #NoKings #LaborDay

They came together in what is now known as “The Champoeg Meetings” (originally held in secrecy under the name “Wolf Meetings”, in an attempt to avoid opposition from McLoughlin).
