A wealth tax to fund defence would be a comparatively easy sell too. People with more money have more to lose in the event of a war, so they should pay more. That was the reasoning behind income tax when it was introduced in 1799. I guess we'd still see Reform voters crying buckets for the rich!

AZ has a pretty dismal history in the law courts, including overinflated claims for its products and intimidation of whistleblowers. The Covid vaccine was unsafe, and eventually scrapped at huge public cost, leaving the UK at the back of the queue. Johnson's "world-beating rollout" is fantasy.

Just look at History to see how fragile democracy is. It disappeared in Greece in 404BCE & never emerged again until the end of absolute monarchy. Even then, from the moment the word "democracy" was used to describe modern regimes, it took 300 years to reach universal suffrage.

The selection of "what is news" and who is "making the news" is especially insidious. By creating every story from the starting point of a statement by Johnson, now Badenoch, Musk, Farage etc, then giving the reply of Starmer later, it constantly portrays Labour as reactive rather than proactive.

Before National Curriculum, my School (an old state grammar) never bothered with the English Lit O level. We took English Lang a year early. Then we read Henry IV, Gatsby, Crucible, Mice & Men, Christmas Carol, Heart of Darkness... short works which inspired a lot of students to opt for A level.
