If the objective is Indian football development, we should be asking: Are we investing in the things that will make India better in the next 5, 10 and 15 years, or are we going to keep buying short-term glory and keep pretending that this is good for Indian Football? (8/n)

There's nothing wrong with giving the fans a chance to watch one of the biggest national teams in football. But I would have much rather we faced Brazil in the World Cup than buy our way into playing them. (7/n)

We need to start at home first. Forget Asia, we need to look at South Asia first. We have failed to beat Bangladesh in recent times, and here we think we can compete with Brazil!? (6/n)

We seem to repeatedly chase spectacular one-off events instead of fixing the structural problems that are actually needed to be a competitive footballing nation. The Messi India tour is another example of this broader obsession with spectacle. (5/n)

If so much money is splashed to bring elite teams to India, you have to ask what else that money could accomplish if invested directly into the football ecosystem. How many coaches? How many young players could receive sustained development? (4/n)

India is nowhere close to Brazil or Uruguay in terms of footballing quality! Exposure matters, yes, but it is not going to happen by simply playing two friendly games for 90 minutes against elite opposition. (3/n)

Reports suggest that the Brazil friendly alone has a budget of around ₹50 crore (~$5M), with ₹35–40 crore reportedly going to the Brazilian federation as an appearance fee. The flight cost for Brazil's delegation is reportedly another ₹6 crore. (2/n)

🧵 RANT THREAD AIFF hosting Brazil and Uruguay might be one of the dumbest decisions in a long series of questionable decisions by Indian football's administrators, and the money involved makes it even harder to understand. (1/n)

My guess is the earlier kickoff time is too early for Europe, especially for the stadium going audience

Ranjit Bajaj took loans worth ₹2 crore (~$250K), risking his own property, to fund visas, travel & stay for young Indian footballers—with zero support from AIFF. I hope these kids are picked by top clubs soon as they are the hope of Indian football. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

Its funny you wrote "Suds G" because in India we add a "ji" (pronounced as the alphabet "G") as a respectful suffix to people's names! 😂

Ahh I see what you mean. Not an on-field sport, but chess perhaps. You could be one move away from checkmate, not see it, and still end up losing. Although this would probably never happen with top ranked players, only very low rated players I'd imagine

Agreed! The van Nistelrooy poacher archetype is something you don't see anymore because every striker (and for that matter, every player) is required to do so much more than their basic functions

Given the way the game is evolving the concept of a classic CF is dead now, isn't it? Think most teams just prefer to spread their goals across their forward line

Like any tech, I think it all depends on how it ends up being used — students might copy-paste answers for discussion forums without using their own brains, teachers might auto-grade it, or it could be used responsibly for the applications you mentioned.
