Today, when the organised far-right are once again on the rise throughout Europe and racial violence in the UK is escalating, we remember this: together, we can beat fascism.

People came together across the country throughout the 1930s to stop fascism. And despite support from some in the media with headlines like “Hurrah for the Blackshirts!” - people organised and beat the BUF on the streets and at the ballot box. They never won a seat in Parliament.

But the people of London met the call “all out against fascism” - and the largest anti-fascist mobilisation in British history took place in what became known as the Battle of Cable Street. Mosley’s fascists were stopped from marching through our streets.

“They shall not pass.” 90 years ago today, as antisemitism and fascism were on the rise throughout Europe, Oswald Mosley’s racist British Union of Fascists planned a provocative march through the Jewish community of East London.

Too many politicians seem incapable of any real leadership – whether at home or internationally – preferring to agitate hate, violence and inhumanity that makes all of us less safe. This latest proposal from Reform provides a stark example of that.
