I remember my dad taking me to tower records the day the division bell was released. there was excitement in the store that I was in awe of. He immediately went into his car (late 80’s toranado) and listened to the first side as we just drove the streets of Philly.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 4/1/2022 Red Hot Chili Peppers/Unlimited Love Not my hottest music take, but a take is that John is the most important member. What his energy and artistry bring to the sound is on full display. An explosion of tones of sound of emotion.

A neon light in the shape of an asterisk, and the bands name and album title in the center.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 10/16/2020 Sturgill Simpson/Cuttin Grass Vol. 1 Talk about a departure. COVID game Sturgill time to record the album he had talked about making, and it’s hard to pick which come across better (or the more recent jammy/groove versions). A depth of talent on full display.

Sturgill sits atop a riding lawnmower wearing shorts, slip on vans, a t shirt, and sunglasses

#20of2025 #MusicSky 9/27/2019 Sturgill Simpson/Sound & Fury A theme with my favorite artists is risk. The risk to take a chance or indulge a passion/influence. Great example here. Sturgill is still changing and indulging, but this was the first and most intense of these changes.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 7/31/2012 Shovels and Rope/O Be Joyful The vocal harmonies from this band are up there with John and Paul. Heard this record pretty soon after moving to Charleston and fell in love.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 7/16/2007 Motörhead/Better Motörhead Than Dead Another live album! Saw Motörhead for the first (only) time on this tour, the 30th anniversary. Went solo, and was blown away. raw power, intensity, and presence always stuck with me, as did the memory of being deaf for hours.

Mikkey Dee, Phil Campbell, and Lemmy in a Holy Trinity type overlay, the famous Bomber Rig is in the background.

#20of2025 #MusicSky Beck/The Information One of a few artists who have “reinvented” themselves multiple times, yet able to return to that previous version of themselves. This one is part Art School Beck, Pop Beck, and Alt Beck. It’s also maybe the best album packaging of all time.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 10/31/2006 My Morning Jacket/Okonokos Is a live album eligible? Don’t really care. This is one of the great live recording of all time. It showcases MMJ at their best - the vocals, the jams, the mastery of their instruments.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 7/18/2006 Los Lonely Boys/Sacred They get the perfect sound on this one - true to their cultural and musical roots. Guitar that swings between blowing the doors off or wrapping you up in its arms.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 5/52006 Red Hot Chili Peppers/Stadium Arcadium bands should be complimentary, but this record takes that to another level. The band is warm, symmetrical. AK’s lyrics give you the full breadth that he can, John and Flea’s backing harmonies are perfect, and John’s solos…wow

The record title STADIUM ARCADIUM drifts in outer space in between two planets

#20of2025 #MusicSky 3/7/2006 Isobel Campbell and Mari Lanegan/Ballad of the Broken Seas One of the greatest vocal pairings of all time. An album that is beautiful, that’s deep, that’s warm. The zenith of the mid aughts Lanegan renaissance.

Campbell fixes her hair in an older hotel room mirror while Lanegan reads the Bible on the hotel bed.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 8/31/2004 Mastodon/Leviathan The best metal album of the last 25. Maybe the best concept album of the same time frame. Chugging and complex. Heavy enough to collapse a bridge. Forces you out of the seat and into the fire.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 8/10/2004 Mark Lanegan Band/Bubblegum The most accessible album from my favorite singer of all time. The sparseness of it creates an album that invites you in and makes the honesty worth so much more. Lyrics that are accessible/vulnerable/a tapestry of emotion

Cover of Lanegans’ Bubblegum. Black background with the title written in red block letters down the side.

#20of2025 #MusicSky 4/1/2003 The White Stripes/ Elephant Is there a ‘most WS’ record? An albums with a bands most distilled sound? Maybe not with Jack and Meg, but this one is my personal touchstone for that. The volume (UP) the riffage, the straight rock and roll, the tenderness.

Jack White and Meg White sit atop a circus trunk. Meg is crying, Jack stares intently at a lightbulb.
