125 years ago this month, in October 1901, a Buffalo Bill Wild West Show train & a Southern Railway freight train were involved in a horrific crash in North Carolina. It didn't lead to any human fatalities (although Annie Oakley was badly injured), but it tragically took the lives of 100+ horses.

The completion of the transcontinental railroad didn't just revolutionize passenger train travel (although yes), nor just affect significantly & too often destructively countless Americans, both workers & communities (although definitely yes). It also changed US commerce & society in so many ways.

On July 4th, 1926, Kenichi Zenimura organized a game between his Fresno Athletic Club & a Negro Leagues team. This week I started to show my Witches students Hocus Pocus (1993) and they were like "this is a bit violent for kids right?" when the witches are hanged, and I was like "no, no, it's just from the 90s." And then I watched the rest of it at home and was like "yowza" so I wrote about that feeling.

As commercial Trains! developed from that October 1826 origin point, one main place & way they did so was in connection to the Early Republic's booming New England ports (a boom greatly helped by these expanding railroad lines, natch), each of which sheds distinct light on these histories.
