I know that browser "cookies" have got a bad reputation from a privacy perspective, but CBC News used to use a simple, non-tracking cookie to remember which local news feed you wanted to show up on the home page (www.cbc.ca/news), and now there is […] [Original post on front-end.social]

If any web accessibility professionals need a real-world example of how not to do "responsive" web design, and specifically an example of a website breaking browser zoom by using viewport units for font size, may I present […] [Original post on front-end.social]
View of the article body text in a full-screen window, at my browser's default 110% zoom level. It has a very small font and long line lengths, with 4 paragraphs of text taking up 2/3 the width of the screen, plus a sidebar linking to other articles. This is the same view I get at any more zoomed-out levels, too.The same window with the browser zoom bumped up a single step to 120%. The effective text font size is more than 3 times the size, half a paragraph filling the whole screen. This is the same text size you get at any higher magnification levels, too.

I have discovered that there is something worse than sharing digital posters (e.g. on Instagram or webpages) with a QR code instead of an actual link or URL for people to find out more. What's worse is to use a genAI tool to make the poster, and get […] [Original post on front-end.social]
A QR-code like graphic with bullseye circles in three corners (instead of 3 large bullseye squares and one small one), a logo in the centre with an unexplained letter C, and than a pixel grid filling in the rest of the space. Except some of the pixels are partial, even separate from the ones that touch the circular logo in the middle.Something that looks closer to a standard QR code, with square recognition patterns in 3 corners, but the small circle in the fourth corner isn't quite right and the pixel grid is all smudged & uneven.

On a Mastodon server? Go to your profile on the website, click that "Edit Profile" banner, then click the camera icons (labelled "Replace Image") over your banner and profile images. You'll now get a pop-up menu with the option to add alt text.
Screenshot of my Mastodon profile in Edit profile mode, with the new image menu popped up above the banner. It has 3 options: Replace image, Add alt text, and Remove image.

Interesting approach to a cookie banner, and so easy to implement for the devs: Tell people that they can always block cookies from their browser settings. I think this *could* be GDPR compliant if they don't share any of their own analytic data with […] [Original post on front-end.social]

Front-end devs on here: Arguing about what should be a link or a button, and with which ARIA roles. Front-end devs (or their "AI" tools) out there making real websites: Build multi-level nested menus out of divs that only open on hover, and then disable […] [Original post on front-end.social]

🤦🏻‍♀️ (That *is* the name on my credit card. It is also the name on my bill with the service that I'm paying with this form. So it's not like they don't accept hyphens in names. It's that they expect that the credit card companies won't accept hyphens in […] [Original post on front-end.social]

This new "more replies found" feature on mastodon conversations would be nice if it wasn't so intrusive, popping up over top of the replies I'm currently trying to read! @mods Any chance we could get this added to the custom stylesheet for front-end.social? […] [Original post on front-end.social]
A scrollable column in the Mastodon web app "deck" view, with a post & replies, and a little pop-up notification box floating over top of the replies, saying More replies found, with a Show button and a close button. (The thread is a tongue-in-cheek one about museum heists, but that's only relevant because the replies are full of tongue-in-check snark that one actually might enjoy reading.)

Belated testing of my microsite on my phone reminds me that mobile browsers still zoom out on websites by default if you don't add the extra "yes, I'm mobile friendly" metadata, even when the web page would have rendered just fine, no overflow, at normal […] [Original post on front-end.social]
The homepage of the 256 Byte Site, on an Android phone, in lightmode. The text uses a generic sans-serif font, and other than the full-width logo, it is all very tiny.

Introducing... The 256 Byte* Website! *(per file) Last week @tantek.com posted a little puzzle for the 256th day of the year: > build an entire website where each resource fits into at most 8-bits worth of bytes […] [Original post on front-end.social]
Screenshot of a web page with title About Me, link to home, a thumbnail sized, low-res grayscale image of me, the text "This site was hand-coded by Amelia Bellamy-Royds, Sept 2025. It will not be updated." Then a logo that fills the width of the screen, of the text "256 Byte Site" arranged, in two colours, over a pink circle. The background of the page is a cyan-on-white gradient.A matching web page, but in dark mode (with a cyan-on-charcoal background gradient), title An 8-Bit Website, text "A challenge from Tantek: make a website with each file <256 bytes. My rule: valid, accessible." Then a list of links: About, Why?, Rules, Tips, More. The nav list has custom bullets made from hash (#) characters. The same pink-circle text logo is at the bottom of the page.

For people who use the frequent-website shortcuts feature of the #Firefox new tab page: If you want to pin a new link to that list, and it hasn't shown up yet — especially if you have previously "dismissed" a no-longer-valid link to the same web domain […] [Original post on front-end.social]
Partial screenshot of the Firefox new tab page. The first in a row of shortcut link icons is highlighted. I've triggered the three-dots "Open menu" button associated with it. The resulting pop-up menu has options Unpin, Edit (highlighted), Open in a New Window, Open in a New Private Window, Dismiss, and Delete from History.

My brain is in a very "oooh, shiny" state today. Keeps going off on tangents & down rabbit holes based on posts I read. Someone shares a "beautiful minisite" from a type foundry launching their sensible new sans serif body typeface, and within seconds my […] [Original post on front-end.social]
Two pieces of paper with large handwritten text. The first page has capital letters for half the alphabet, with various repeats trying out slightly different shapes. The second page has the words "Amelia's Brain Is Distracted Today" in title case followed by four variations on an exclamation mark. It was written using a fading wedge-tip black marker, creating thick strokes whose width varies by the angle, with an unexpected streaked effect reminiscent of brush strokes. In addition to the upstroke ribbon effect doing a figure-8 around the initial downstrokes, there are various other cursive flourishes on the letters, which are often the parts varied in the repeated takes trying out different versions of the letters.
