I went for a run to reset myself in DC this week and realized I could map a pretty significant portion of my life onto a few miles of city streets.

My eye twitch is one of the more reliable indicators that I have crossed some invisible line from “busy” into “probably should have paid attention to that earlier.”

Earlier this month I spent a few days doing something that was physically harder than most of what I do in a normal week. Paddling into the wind, learning to stern, sleeping in the wilderness.

One of the unexpected things about having your normal routines disrupted is how noticeable small comforts become. Things you normally don't think twice about suddenly feel like luxuries.

There are things I add to my calendar because I have to. There are things I add because someone else needs me to. And then there are the things I add because I genuinely want to.

I have a note from a friend that is more than six months old. I still carry it in my purse every day.

A small hill I am willing to die on:  Convenience is not a moral failing. Sometimes you have the time and energy to make something from scratch. Sometimes you buy the pre-cooked hard-boiled eggs.

I'm starting to think self-care has been made unnecessarily complicated. Sometimes self-care is a massage. Sometimes it's meditation. And sometimes it is ordering groceries mid-week because you know you're not going to have the capacity to figure out lunch.

A small experiment I'm trying this fall: walking the dog without my phone. I know. Revolutionary.

Every year, the first truly cool morning of fall does something to my nervous system. I don't even realize how tightly I've been holding myself until the weather changes.

A client introduced me to the phrase mono no aware this week. One translation is the “ahhness of things.” I have been thinking about it ever since.

There are two kinds of Minnesotans: People who spend all year waiting for the State Fair. And people who would rather be literally anywhere else. I am, with absolutely no shame, in the first group.

There is something particularly lovely about the way summer memories seem to arrive through food. This summer, I ate apricots, plums, nectarines, peaches and an unreasonable quantity of berries.

One of my favorite things about summer this year has been the weird little moments of sensory nostalgia. A smell, a taste, something I saw, and suddenly I was somewhere from my childhood that I hadn’t thought about in years.

Every once in a while, I encounter someone whose work makes me think, “Oh, you see the world the way I do.” That was my experience with Tracee Worley, and honestly, I left her webinar feeling a little less alone.

I took a quiz about my role in a feminist dystopia and, honestly, Seventeen Magazine could never. My result was “Smuggler.” I have never felt so personally attacked(in the best of ways) by an internet quiz.

If you work in the nonprofit sector and you aren't reading Vu Le, I have a very strong recommendation for you. Go find him. Then prepare to have your thinking challenged in the best possible way.

Gasp. Tattoos at work??? Yes. I am heavily tattooed, and yes, I can somehow keep my permanent art covered during a client meeting. But one of my tattoos requires an explanation.

Three things bringing me joy lately: 📖 A paper planner. 🎮 Mario Tennis (Toadette is queen). ⏱️ A physical timer. Not exactly groundbreaking productivity advice.

Some days I catch myself thinking: "If I could just find the right planner... the right app... the right hack... I'd finally get it together." The funny part? I'm already together.

Hours were dedicated to collecting crayfish at the lake.  Every new one went carefully into a bucket so my kids could admire them.....  Then Millie noticed the bucket. (1/5)

My kids spent two hours looking for crayfish at Bear Head Lake. No one was entertaining them. No one was rushing them. They were completely absorbed. (1/5)

I packed an embroidery kit for summer travel because I wanted something for my hands besides my phone. One stitch at a time is a good reminder that not everything valuable has to be fast, productive, or online.

I used to think my collection of hobbies meant I didn't stick with anything. Now I think it means I love learning. Not every interest has to become a lifelong identity. Sometimes a season of curiosity is enough.

I still get homesick when I travel for work. I've stopped treating that as a problem to solve. Homesickness is evidence you've built a life worth missing. The people, routines, and places that make coming home feel so good are exactly what make leaving meaningful.

Work travel got easier when I stopped trying to recreate home and started bringing small pieces of it with me instead. A grocery run. Comfortable clothes. Mindless TV after a long day. Tiny rituals can make unfamiliar places feel a little more like your own.

Everyone has a rope course. The people who seem completely confident aren't confident about everything. They're just standing on different platforms than you are. Remembering that has made me a little more generous with myself.

A week at Wolf Ridge gave me a new phrase: nature humblings. Watching each fifth grader tackle rope courses, hike, and canoe, then witness each have a separate moment when confidence gave way to uncertainty was insightful. Nature has a way of reminding us that everyone is still learning something.

Every form of movement taught me something different. The goal was never to find the perfect hobby. It was to keep learning what I needed. Curiosity has turned out to be a better guide than certainty.

I used to think moving from one hobby to another meant I couldn't commit. Now I think each one was giving me new information. Not everything has to become a permanent part of your life to be worth trying.

My favorite part of my "If I Had Time Day" list isn't the work. It's the slow coffee, the book, the long walk. A reminder that I'm not behind. I'm seasonal. And this season isn't the only one I'll get.

Whenever life gets especially full, I find myself thinking: "If I just had one day." A few years ago, I started keeping a list for that day. Not because I expect to do it all now. Because some things deserve a place to wait until the season changes.

I think Lake Superior slows my brain down to the speed of my body. Standing next to something that has been here for thousands of years has a way of shrinking a to-do list to its proper size.

This winter I learned about lake smoke. I thought I was looking at fog rising from Lake Superior. Turns out lake smoke forms when extremely cold air moves over warmer water. The lake releases heat into the air and appears to breathe. Some places never stop teaching you.

The triangle of Care, Income, and Community looks different for every woman. Some have flexibility. Some carry more care. Some are in a season where survival is the whole job. December taught me this: assume the weight you can’t see. You’re doing the math with what you have.

Amelia @ Silphium @ameliaatsilphium.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
December was the month everything came due at once. I didn’t navigate it gracefully, I survived it. And on the other side, something clicked: most women are constantly negotiating Care, Income, and Community. You can’t maximize all three at once. That’s not failure. It’s math.

So many women I’ve worked with gave everything to missions that didn’t give back. They deserved structure, dignity, and a team that saw them. Silphium grew from that truth. Small by design. Rooted. A place where work can actually feel better.

Workplace trauma is everywhere, and most people keep calling it burnout because the real word feels too heavy. I spent years trying to create safety inside systems that couldn’t hold it. It hollowed me out. Building Silphium was my way back to something humane.

There's something about cold morning air and still enough quiet to hear yourself think. The life I wanted wasn't a future reward — it existed in small rhythms and environments that made me feel human-full instead of achievement-full.

Amelia @ Silphium @ameliaatsilphium.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
Burnout narrowed my imagination to survival. Then someone gave me an assignment: write a letter from two years in the future — not a plan, a real letter. What surprised me? The life I wanted took shape not through reinvention, but through orientation.
