Progress on the shawl I'm making. It's about 60% done at this point. I selected the yarn because I liked the gradient but I have feelings about the stripes. It's fine. IT IS FINE. It's just not what I had imagined. #Crochet #AAPIartists #FiberArts

A skein of rainbow gradient yarn sits below an unfinished crochet shawl with the rainbow colors in stripes against a cream background.

I just started to read Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and as a very jaded reader, I admit that the author got me in the first paragraph.

Chapter One: You are about to begin reading a new book, and to be honest, you are a little tense. The beginning of a novel is like a first date. You hope that from the first lines an urgent magic will take hold, and you will sink into the story like a hot bath, giving yourself over entirely. But this hope is tempered by the expectation that, in reality, you are about to have to learn a bunch of people’s names and follow along politely like you are attending the baby shower of a woman you hardly know. And that’s fine, goodness knows you’ve fallen in love with books that didn’t grab you in the first paragraph. But that doesn’t stop you from wishing they would, from wishing they would come right up to you in the dark of your mind and kiss you on the throat.

Slightly miffed that there is no NEW HAMPSHIRE result, but I guess Portland, Maine is close enough. mydialect.us/quiz-standar...

A map of the US showing that Amber Ying's dialect most closely resembles those from Portland, Maine.

Two figures showing that the top 3 cities most similar to my dialect are Portland, ME, Boston, MA, and NYC. The 3 cities least similar are Omaha, NE, Kansas CIty, MO, and Milwaukee, WI. There is also a list of questions and answer that gave me away: 1) Using rotary, 2) the vowel in "aunt", 3) no idea what an insect that rolls into a ball is, and 4) how I pronounce "centaur".

I have no idea which row I'm on but it doesn't matter: It's just two rows repeating over and over again, and I'm not switching colors. But the shawl is coming along, even after frogging all the way back to the beginning, and I am quite happy.

Who wants to help me break in my new deck??!! Deck of oracle cards, that is. Your favorite local cartomancer (i.e. me) just got a deck of New England themed oracle cards and would love to do some readings for y'all! $5 for a single card draw. $8 for a two-card draw. $10 for a three-card draw.

From an interview with Emily Wilson at NPR: www.npr.org/2026/07/29/n...

When I was studying Homer as an undergraduate, nobody ever said, "You must read this or that translation." Translations were very much despised. They were for amateurs. If you're a serious classicist, of course, you read the poems in Greek. You read the commentaries, you read dictionaries, you read original texts.
