Another of my hobby horses is Buchan on Race and Empire and how a man aspiring to be decent and kind (having read Memory-Hold-The-Door) could be so determined to see Empire as a Force for Good to the Poor Foreigners and yet also write Prester John (Bad People can Corrupt the Imperial Burden)

If Grant had a failing it was not really paying attention to what the enemy was doing because he knew what he wanted to do. He nearly let the garrison at Fort Donelson stage a surprise escape and got punched first at Shiloh. But in both cases he just got on with his own ideas anyway!

Neil Gaiman wrote a short “Problem with Susan” story which I didn’t find very satisfying. But then it does seem rather like Narnia is just one story to eternity and unlikely to be an exclusive route. The Wood Between the Worlds is implied to be infinite, after all.
