Remember when Republicans drew Virginia's Congressional map so Black people were packed into one district and said we should be grateful they gave our community this district. NOW they can have one district and see how much they love it.

Attached to the tweet is a photo of a Virginia license plate that says:

Appointing unqualified figures is a key tactic of authoritarians, who turn to staffers who are fiercely loyal because they are not qualified or talented enough to rise to power in a nonpartisan system.

They recognize that without the leader who elevated them, they will never again be in power-and sometimes will be in prison-so they will cleave to him to the end.

We have a massively random and beautiful gift of life. This is a beautiful reminder today that everything is temporary.
A shot from the Artemis II of the far side of the moon, right at the line that divides the moon into permanent light and permanent dark. It is the first time humans have ever seen this perspective. The moon, in the foreground, a crescent of light sitting on top of a pocked, crater covered, sphere surrounded by endless, deepest dark. In the background towards the top of the circle of the moon, upper left, is the tiny globe of earth, earthsetting.

Trump pardoned Lt. Clint Lorance, Maj. Mathew Golsteyn, & Chief Edward Gallagher all of whom committed or were accused of horrifying crimes. Lorance was serving a 19-year sentence for ordering his platoon to shoot indiscriminately at civilians in order to “make them afraid of us.” Plus, history.
Screenshot of simple Google search of illegally orders carried out by the US Military, a non-exhaustive list:
• The My Lai Massacre (1968): During the Vietnam War, U.S. soldiers of Charlie Company followed orders from 2nd Lt. William Calley to kill unarmed civilians, resulting in approximately 300 to 500 deaths. Calley was convicted of premeditated murder, and his defense of "just following orders" was rejected by the court.
• The Sand Creek & Wounded Knee Massacres (1864 & 1890): During the Indian Wars, troops carried out orders that led to the slaughter of hundreds of non-combatant men, women, and children.
• No Gun Ri Massacre (1950): During the Korean War, U.S. troops killed over 150 civilians following orders to treat refugees as potential combatants.
• Abu Ghraib Torture (2003-2004): During the Iraq War, personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison engaged in the abuse and humiliation of detainees, often claiming they were following instructions from superiors to "soften up" prisoners for interrogation.
• The Haditha Killings (2005): U.S. Marines killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in retaliation for an IED attack, an action that violated international laws against targeting non-combatants.

Last time Americans had to fight for the right to vote:
A black and white photo from the 1960s of the feet of a Black woman on the March from Selma to Montgomery to fight for Black people to vote. There is a tarp on the ground with straw, and a woman is lying down with a white blanket over her. We only see her feet with cutout padding on top of the the blisters on the balls of her feet and her heels. Next to them is the pair of boots, worn leather, that are causing the blisters. Stiff, and sturdy, and worn. A photograph of the attack on Marchers on the Selma to Montgomery March for Black voting rights. John Lewis lies to the right on the ground as he is attacked by a trooper with a billy club that resulted in a concussion and skull fracture. He is the first in a line of Black people on the ground, outnumbered by police who are beating them all mercilessly. On the left side of the photo, a Black man in a Black suit is falling to the ground. Black and white photograph at the same March, in a different area. Amelia Boynton lies unconscious on her back on a grassy knoll after being beaten by a trooper at the Edmund Pettus bridge. Her arm is flung out to the right. She wears a white jacket. To her left are two women, one with a plaid jacket and a white scarf covering her hair. The woman in plaid is seated so close to Amelia that Amelia’s head is touching her knee. She looks down at Amelia’s face. She is biting the knuckle of her right thumb and her fingers are bunched up. She looks traumatized. A woman in a long white coat only shows her back. To the right is a white male state trooper with a baton still in his right hand from beating her unconscious. He looms over her and the woman in plaid but he stands right at Amelia’s feet. He has a gas mask in his left hand. He looks down at her with a sneer and face full of contempt.

61 years ago today, Bloody Sunday, one of the most notorious modern examples of depravity masquerading as government.
A photograph of The late Georgia Congressman John Lewis, in a light-colored trench coat, surrounded by five other Black men on the right side of the photos. They face a row of advancing white police. In the background is a crowd of white people, standing behind a row of parked cars, watching. Lewis was one of the leaders of what was supposed to be a march from Selma to Montgomery, motivated by the killing of Jimmie Lee Jackson, a Black man shot by a state trooper after a civil rights demonstration in nearby Marion, Ala. George Wallace ordered the police to quash the march. The peaceful marchers, including youth, refused to turn back, kneeling and praying instead. The troopers and sheriff's deputies, some on horseback, eventually attacked, beating marchers with batons and launching tear gas canisters. Lewis' head was cracked open. Local activist Amelia Boynton Robinson was bludgeoned. Dozens were injured. And later, two white civil rights activists who came to Alabama to support the marchers were killed, the Rev. James Reeb, and Viola Liuzzo.

If your mom had tried to get an abortion in 1972 in Louisiana, that would have been a crime and she could have been thrown in jail for up to ten years and forced to do hard labor. A reality you are actively bringing back.
In 1972, abortion was illegal in Louisiana, as the state maintained strict criminal bans on the procedure prior to the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in January 1973. The law permitted abortion only to save the life of the pregnant woman.

Key aspects of Louisiana's 1972 abortion landscape included:

• Prohibition: State law (R.S. 14:87) made it a crime to administer medicine, drugs, or use instruments with the intent to procure an abortion.
• Penalties: Criminal abortion was punishable by imprisonment at hard labor for one to ten years, with fines ranging from $10, 000 to $100, 000.
• Strict Exceptions: Abortion was only lawful if necessary to preserve the life of the mother.
• Active Opposition: Louisiana Right to Life notes they were active in protecting these laws in the early 1970s.

These restrictive laws remained in effect until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional in Roe.

Hideous. But this will only end when white people refuse to participate in it (actively or silently); why? b/c this behavior is the American rule not the exception. Rockwell named this “The Problem We All Live With” b/c this treatment—including kids of color—has never *not* been the case.
Screenshot of Norman Rockwell’s iconic 1964 image of 6-year old Ruby Bridges on her way to William Frantz Elementary School, an all-white public school, on November 14, 1960, during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis. Because of threats of violence against her, she is escorted by four deputy U.S. marshals; the painting is framed so that the marshals' heads are cropped at the shoulders, making Bridges the only person fully visible, on profile, wearing a white dress, white shoes and socks, and a white bow in her hair. She holds her books at her side in one hand. Written on the wall behind her is "nigger" and the letters "KKK"; a smashed and splattered tomato thrown against the wall is also visible. The white protesters are not visible, as the viewer is looking at the scene from their point of view. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 36 inches (91 cm) high by 58 inches (150 cm) wide. Two white women, one mid-yell, and the other laughing with the white man, carry a small coffin with a small doll in it, topped with a wreath as they protest Ruby Bridges’ integration of William Frantz Elementary School, an all-white public school, on November 14, 1960, during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis. The coffin leads a throng of white people of all ages. 6-year old Ruby Bridges walks with her mother on a wide sidewalk towards to William Frantz Elementary School, an all-white public school, on November 14, 1960, during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis. She wears a red plaid dress with a black bodice, white Peter Pan color, and Mary Janes and Carey’s a big leather book bag. Her mother, in a red shirt spaced sweater with pearls and a knee length gray skirt with a pleat and holds a lunch box in her left hand and clutches Ruby’s elbow with her right. Ruby clutches her mom’s entire forearm. Police Marshalls in suits and hats surround them and stand between them and the crowds of yelling white people on both sides and behind them holding signs saying “pickaninny”, “whites only,” and “no colored here”. A white woman in a black dress faces them, with her back to to the camera with her fist raised.

A big lie (German: große Lüge) is a gross distortion or misrepresentation of the truth primarily used as a political propaganda technique." The German expression was first used by Adolf Hitler in his book Mein Kampf (1925) to describe how people could be induced to believe so colossal a lie because they would not believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously". Hitler claimed that the technique had been used by Jews to blame Germany's loss in World War I on German general Erich Ludendorff, who was a prominent nationalist political leader in the Weimar Republic. Mulford Act
The Mulford Act was a 1967 California bill that prohibited public carrying of loaded firearms without a permit. Named after Republican assemblyman Don Mulford and signed into law by governor of California Ronald Reagan, the bill was crafted with the goal of disarming members of the Black Panther Party, which was conducting armed patrols of Oakland neighborhoods in what would later be termed copwatching. They garnered national attention after Black Panthers members, bearing arms, marched upon the California State Capitol to protest the bill.

Truly it has always been thus
Toward the end of April 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and fellow leaders in the civil rights movement faced a grim reality in Birmingham, Alabama. With diminished support and fewer volunteers, their campaign to end segregationist policies was teetering on failure. James Bevel, a member of SCLC, came up with an idea to include school-age children in protests to help desegregate Birmingham. The strategy involved recruiting popular teenagers from Black high schools, such as the quarterbacks and cheerleaders, who could influence their classmates to attend meetings with them at Black churches in Birmingham to learn about the non-violent movement. There was also an economic reason to have children participate since adults risked being fired from their jobs for missing work and protesting.

In this Black and White picture from 1963, three Birmingham fire department officers wearing raincoats and helmets hold a fire hose and aim its full pressure in the bottom right foreground. They hold the hose and the eye follows the trajectory of force from the water to the five children and teenagers, in the rear upper left of the photo, trapping them between the blast and a store window. One boy’s body is almost cartwheeling from the pressure of the water. There are a pile of girls behind him as they try to protect each other from the gust.

This isn’t a snipe. She is telling the truth about who is creating legitimacy for horrors so that in 1/10/100 years no one can claim to be confused about who is doing what to whom and why. She is appropriately crediting Kavanaugh for providing the legal cover for ICE agents doing things like this:
Aliya Rahman, a disabled US Citizen with black hair and in a black puffer coat, crying out in agony with strands of hair across her face, being hogcarried by masked, militarized ICE agents after they smashed her driver seat window, cut her seatbelt off, and dragged her out of her car as she turned into an check point trying to get to a doctor’s appointment.

A 1965 black and white photograph from the Edmund Pettis bridge, on the day of the March from Selma to Montgomery for the right to vote. On the far left side of the photo are six white Alabama state troopers in uniform in a crooked line like a scar. The two men in the front are midstride and one’s left arm is at 90 degrees and pointing toward the men, the other holds a baton. Behind him other troopers in gas masks are mid jog.

Goodbye year of the snake. Goodbye to the year of horrible learnings and teaching. 2026, watch out.

The left is boycotting the Arts because Trump is supporting the Arts.

But we will not let them cancel shows without consequences.

The arts are for everyone - and the Left is mad about it. Screenshot from NPR website on May 3, 2025.

America.
April 24 1851 Broadside from the Boston Public Library Collection warning Black Boston residents of kidnapping slave catchers in the city.

CAUTION!!

COLORED PEOPLE OF BOSTON, ONE & ALL,
You are hereby respectfully CAUTIONED and advised, to avoid conversing with the Watchmen and Police Vilicers of Boston,
For since the recent ORDER OF THE MAYOR & ALDERMEN, they are empowered to act as
KIDNAPPERS
AND
Slave Catchers,
And they have already been actually employed in
KIDNAPPING, CATCHING, AND KEEPING
SLAVES. Therefore, if you value your LIBERTY, and the Welfare of the Fugitives among you, Shun them in every possible manner, as so many HOUNDS on the track of the most unfortunate of your race.
Keep a Sharp Look Out for
KIDNAPPERS, and have
TOP EYE open.

A perfect response.

Were there moments that you missed? Anything that happened that's on the cutting room floor?

I don't think there's anything I missed that I wish I'd gotten. I'll give you a little anecdote:
Stephen Miller was perhaps the most concerned about the portrait session. He asked me,"Should I smile or not smile?" and I said, "How would you want to be portrayed?" We agreed that we would do a bit of both. And then when we were finished, he comes up to me to shake my hand and say goodbye. And he says to me, "You know, you have a lot of power in the discretion you use to be kind to people." And I looked at him and I said, "You know, you do, too."

A tiny beauty in a field of horrors. NYC earning all the Christmas tunes this season.
A shot of an empty Brooklyn street on a quiet snowy morning with cars lined on both sides. A tree canopy, covered in snow, stretches towards the grey sky.

Screenshot of Mary Oliver poem:

Of the Empire

We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

Same, but dumber and uglier
Detail of the oil painting the Coronation of Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David. Napoleon, is in the right foreground wearing a wreath of gold and wearing opulent fabric wrapped around him like a tunic. His arms are upraised and he holds a golden crown. Center rear is Pope Pius VII in formal papal garb, his face half blocked by Napoleon’s ermine sleeve. Text over this scene says “Napoleon took the crown from Pope Pius VII”
