We talked engaging a wide audience, telling 'stories' about research, #sciencecommunication & writing narrative non-fiction books. Who better to quote than the master of science story-telling, Stephen Jay Gould. Many thanks for the invite 💚

Great to see Wild Pavements in RHS Wisley's shop. Urban gardeners - with their expertise in plant id & love of plant diversity - have such a vital contribution to make in caring for our wild #urbanplants as I explained in the Aug 26 issue of The Garden magazine #urbannature @bsbibotany.bsky.social

& I definitely wouldn't encourage folks new to #plantidentification to pick plants in the carrot family to eat as the journalist does here. Separating out the small number which are edible from those which are highly poisonous is risky for beginners.

Beyond gardens, in my book Wild Pavements I explain why I'm not a fan of #foraging in our precious urban green spaces - too many people, too few plants, too much potential for damage. #urbannature

Interesting, in principle, recent newspaper feature which recommends gardeners eat the "weeds" in their garden. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Can’t beat them? Eat them! Ten of the tastiest garden weeds
Edible weeds grow in abundance in our gardens, streets and parks. With a little know-how, you can harvest delicious, nutritious, free greens

There's nothing more fun than taking folks out to look at the amazing #pavementplants which find a roothold in our towns & cities and seeing the wildlife they support. Join me for a prowl at Consider the Wondrous Festival. Tickets here www.ticketsource.com/considerthew... #urbannature #naturewalks

This is extremely serious! Watching the #solareclipse in a busy S London park last night, we witnessed numerous blatant egs of #communitycohesion triggered simply by nature. Folks shared eclipse glasses & pinhole cameras & chatted w/ complete strangers. Help! @london.gov.uk

Best place for #urbanbirding on a scorching day? Near water of course for that faintly cooler breeze. & last Sunday with the London Bird Club @lnhs.bsky.social at Staines Reservoir in W London, we found not 1 Black-necked Grebe, not 2, not 3, but a fab 4. #urbanbirding #urbannature #WildPavements

Hey birder friends. I'm writing a feature about "holiday patches" - an area you visit regularly, perhaps on a family holiday, & birdwatch Mine's here, Skern Bay, Taw Torridge estuary, N Devon, a nice contrast w/ London birding. I'd love to hear about yours. 🙏. #birdwatching

What did we find? A selection of plants originating from South America to the Middle East, via the Mediterranean. Highlights were two success stories - Jersey Cudweed (Gnaphalium luteo-album) and Four-leaved Allseed (Polycarpon tetraphyllum). #urbanplants
