Pastel background with the title in bold: Practice Accessibility

Below in bullet points:
Require masks/testing at your gatherings.

Make sure your content online is accessible. (captions, photo descriptions, etc)

Ensure physical accessibility & consider physical barriers that may fatigue/hurt/etc disabled folk.

Keep note or ask about allergies/food requirements. Be aware if serving food has allergens, fragrance, etc.

Consider sensory requirements for folks who have sensitivities to light, sound, smells, etc.

Communicate accessibility measures about facilities like bathrooms, seating, wheelchair accessibility, etc. Proactivity is key!Pastel background with heading reading: other tips

below in bullet points reads:

Think about your own behavior around disabled folks. Disability is a neutral term - not all disabilities are seen as negative!

Solidarity is an ACTION! Continue to be willing to learn, accept feedback, and show support for the disabled community!

Ask before helping. Not all disabled people want or need help.

Speak out when you may be met with ableist language, poor accessibility, or any opportunity to bring solidarity to disabled folks. We are often so tired/in pain because of our disability or illness to speak up ourselves. pastel background with title in black reads: Sources

I put together a little guide for Mask Bloc OKC and thought I would share!

a quick guide by Mask Bloc OKC" surrounded with an ornate black frame.Pastel background with black text that reads:
KEY DEFINITIONS

Ableism - The discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior.

At its heart, ableism is rooted in the assumption that disabled people require ‘fixing’ and defines people by their disability. Like racism and sexism, ableism classifies entire groups of people as ‘less than,’ and includes harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and generalizations of people with disabilities.

Immunocompromised - Having a weakened immune system. People who are immunocompromised have a reduced ability to fight infections and other diseases. This may be caused by certain diseases or conditions, such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, malnutrition, and certain genetic disorders. It may also be caused by certain medicines or treatments, such as anticancer drugs, radiation therapy, and stem cell or organ transplant. Also called immunosuppressed.Pastel background with black text heading that reads:

Education

and then in a bulleted list:

Listen to your disabled friends and family, ask questions, and accept feedback!

Understand and unpack the impact of ableism on everybody, not just disabled people.

Dyanamic Disabilities exist! Some people are able to be ‘normally’ one day, and then unable to move the next.

Familiarize yourself on viral illnesses, chronic illness, and mass disabling events.

Accomodations for disabled people help all! Ex. seating, flexible schedules, railings, elevators, drive up/delivery services.
Black text on a pastel background: Amplify Disabled Voices & Treat them NORMALLY

And below in bullet points it reads:
Treat disabled folks as full capable humans. Do not treat them like children, shout, or belittle.

Follow disabled creators, business owners, artists, makers, workers, and voices. Interact with their work online and offline if you are able to.

Share & promote our work. The work we create is often very difficult, or limited due to our disabilities.

If you have all of your needs met financially, please consider donating/giving to folks who are living on a set income, dealing with medical bills, or unable to work. A lot of us are under the poverty line.

Vote in elections vote for candidates that support accessibility and reject ableism.

I’m basically bald now thanks to ocd & autoimmune things. I shaved my head originally just for fun, but I think it’s forever.
