Will's used to being a foreigner as a 3rd-culture kid, but when his family moves ‘home’ to the US, he feels like a foreigner there too. Autistic and selectively mute, he invents a new identity to dodge bullying. If the truth gets out, he may lose the only friends he’s ever had. #DVpit #MG #ownvoices

SPEAK UP x KAREEM BETWEEN A 3rd-culture kid finds out moving 'home' is the hardest culture shock of all. Autistic, selectively mute Will pretends to be someone he's not until helping a new student reminds him that the parts of himself he's been hiding are worth sharing. #DVpit #MG #ownvoices

New day, new problems. I used to wonder how I could possibly come up with 40,000 words that would fit together into a story. Now I'm trying to figure out how to whittle that story down to 40K. #amwriting #writingcommunity

Summer writing reality: The schedule is gone. The routine is gone. The kids are everywhere. 'Writing in the margins of a full life' is not a metaphor. It's a Tuesday. #AmWriting #WritingCommunity

Something I keep learning about writing from lived experience: you can't rush the processing part.

End of the school year hits different when you're a writer-parent. Even more so when you're a teacher-writer-parent.

Writing two very different books at the same time has taught me something. The nonfiction wants truth. Every detail, every failure, every hard-won inch of progress. The MG fiction wants emotional truth. What it costs to be misunderstood. Turns out they're not that different after all.

Reminder for writers in the middle of a hard draft: You don't have to make it good today. You just have to make it exist today. #AmWriting #WritingCommunity #WritingMotivation

Something nobody tells you about writing nonfiction from personal experience: some chapters will be easy. And some will ask you to go back somewhere you really don't want to go.

Something I've been sitting with: the books that helped me most weren't the ones with all the answers. They were the ones where I felt, for the first time, that someone understood the question.

The query process has a way of making you read your own work like a stranger would. Which is uncomfortable. But also really useful. #AmQuerying #WritingCommunity #QueryTrenches #AmWriting

Writing for middle grade means writing for the kid who feels like nobody quite gets them yet.

You can be an expert in something and still struggle with it personally. Those two things don't cancel each other out. They just make you human. And sometimes they make you a writer. #AmWriting #WritingCommunity #NonfictionWriter

Something nobody warned me about when I started writing nonfiction from lived experience: some chapters will be easy. And some will definitely not be.

The strange math of writing nonfiction from lived experience: The closer something is to you, the harder it is to write. The harder it is to write, the more someone needs to read it. Keep going anyway. #AmWriting #NonfictionWriter #WritingCommunity
