Here's the way I think about and approach this.

Speaking from a materialist perspective, I think it's extremely inappropriate for the first instinct so many people have to be talking about redemption and atonement rhetoric for a very literal rapist, especially one with the structural and institutional power that being a cis white male innately gives you, the kind of power that makes a university hit you with a slap on the wrist. (And this isn't just me talking, Geller himself frames his societal criticisms in structural, material terms, so he's cultivated a community that looks at things like this materially, which *is* the correct way to approach it.) Jacob Geller is *not* a victim, he's not a tragic misunderstood man being besieged by an angry mob, he is a primary structural beneficiary of multiple dominant class positions, and automatically receives a shield of people that default to seeing his career - his position as a successful, influential media figure with a hell of a lot of social capital - as something that *they* should protect for him, or that should be *protected* at all.

Does this rhetoric actually serve *anyone* other than Jacob? Does a single semester suspension (something that Jacob just admitted was a slap on the wrist) and a decade of silence - while building an extremely influential position in a Left space that he *knew* would rightly approach sexual assault with disgust - count in any way as *accountability*? No. Any kind of next steps after this demand stepping away from structural power and influence, stepping away from wealth-generating platforms, as a *baseline*. *Full blown deception* in service of building influence is not *rehabilitation*. He's not *entitled* to this position. The victim (whose trauma was horrifically dragged out without any kind of consent, care, or consideration, it's absolutely true) needs to be centered above all else. Fearing for an abuser's job before even acknowledging the reality of the person he abused, to me, is a violent inversion of solidarity.

Even more fundamentally, I think, there's simply a deep, ongoing structural violence in a cisgender, straight, white male occupying a dominant position as a "progressive voice" while directly benefitting from the exact institutional leniency designed to insulate men like him from the consequences of patriarchal violence. Is it correct to grant a rapist a continued position of ideological and cultural authority? At what cost to others does that come? What are we telling survivors? What are we telling women? What are we telling the marginalized and subjugated? What are we telling *other men*? At what cost does that come? Are a man's video essays more valuable than their physical safety and psychological well-being?

I feel like something people have fundamentally misunderstood is that the joke with those "Nintendo hire this man" type projects wasn't that they had lots of detail and realistic environments. The joke is that they just carelessly dropped a character into a scene filled with default Unreal assets.

The one that hits the hardest to me is other queer people either outright in the military or justifying the "right" to enlist. So much of our radical roots were suppressed and buried when the neoliberal approach became dominant over liberation and solidarity.
