I am building a website for my Coativille (Villa Pizote) comic series and realized I needed an expanded version of the comic's cover for a responsive background. Of course I can never settle for simple 🥲 so it has expanded into an A3-sized spread that can double as guard pages. Now on to coloring...
A3-sized double page spread for my Villa Pizote (Coativille) ongoing comic series, at its current inking stage. Coloring to emulate the original cover design goes next. The original cover of my self-published comic.

Yay for beanies, not so much yay for the empty eyes. Looks like he's possessed or something. 😅 I did create a mascot self persona a while ago and in fact I use it on my artist branding, but I still feel my OCs are funnier for avatars.

I've been deeply influenced by Walt Kelly and the Belgian Marcinelle school artists, with their fat, expressive ink lines. Have tried the ligne claire style a la Tintin/manga, but I always feel something missing. But once I made my characters on a late friend artist's style —all thin lines— for fun.

September is a month of many official and otherwise comics celebrations in my country and there is even a local awards ceremony where I know everybody. My own kid's comic, Villa Pizote (Coativille), didn't make the cut for this year and I understand that, but it feels weird not joining in - yet. 🥹

Personally I don't give two poo-poos about dudes who think of comics only in grown-up terms. The guy at my right here is Dan Mora, one of the hottest DC/Batman comics artists today. And he got one of my comics for his two sons. I can't ask for more I guess.

Besides being the tallest (in size) book in my library, Art Spiegelman's In The Shadow of No Towers is his own interpretation of being in the bullseye of it all. The huge size probably on purpose to evoke the long gone towers. And with the wit and references only Art could bring in.

Most every relevant Looney Tunes character appears in the film, even if on small, minor roles. Deciding which of them sided with the "good guys" or the bad ones must have been interesting to see. Character-wise, the massive shape of Foghorn Leghorn on a Don-like suit cracks me up. ⬇️

So, in 2026 the dream becomes true: the first self-published episode of Historias de Villa Pizote (Stories of Coativille) featuring my entire cast, some new characters, and a saga that is just getting started. And getting here did just take me 31 years, an obsessive idea and thousands upon thousands of drawings. Happy Birthday Daniel, you're aging more gracefully than I ever could.

🎉 Last Friday, my most enduring "OC" Daniel, who is also the mascot of this profile, turned 31 years young. He definitely ages much better than me. So it was about time to make a detailed post telling his story, his changes over the years, and what's ahead for me and my troupe of characters.

These enigmatic stone spheres play a role in the general plot of my Coativille GN/comic pitch. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding them. In fact you can see my kids here around a half-buried one. (This was a teaser cover, different from the one finally used for the comic's print run)

Atop a semi-buried big stone sphere we see (L to R): Elias, holding a tablet; Daniel, sat atop the stone; Susana, holding her pet coati; Zoé, Susana's older sister, in an earlier design, and a forest capybara, all of them playing important roles on the general story.

Well, last week I officially launched my first shot at an original, serialized comic/GN for children, whose name can be translated to English as "Stories of Coativille". An English version is being considered too. Years of creative work are being distilled into this venture, hoping for more 😊🤞

For this, a self published children's comic, I took myself the liberty to place an anti AI manifesto on the indicia / info page - and with "stay human / natural intelligence" stickers to booth. These were quite sought after at the book fair. Don't know how much more vocal I can get.

Over red-orange background, in Spanish: "No generative AI resources were used in the production of this work", below, a circular design featuring a hand holding a pencil, with surrounding words: "Stay human - natural intelligence". But Bone being targeted a banned book is as old as time and no, I still don't get why either. Now, I got this CBLDF handbook on some convention years ago and well, there's not only all-American Bone on the cover, but it's also signed by Mr. Smith himself of course.

So I owed @jonscrazyblues.bsky.social a #crazysummerblowup collab and this being a hyper busy week ahead for me I feared I couldn’t do the deed but planets somehow aligned and here it is. Just Bubble Fox excelling at his top expertise and my brats being their usual selves.

So, the final piece to finish my TBA comic before hitting the print shop was this cutaway volcano diagram. While searching references I had to wade through a sea of depressing, shitty AI slop. But my version won't be. This took me an hour tops to make. I'm even making anti-ai stickers. More later. 🌋

Soo, major rookie mistakes were made. My comics' artwork wasn't made to the exact specifications of the chosen printer and here I am moaning about repositioning everything and remake most of the coloring. 😭 Fortunately it is just about twenty pages, but it still sucks. Lesson learned. 🥲

Even if many kids have smartphones these days (they shouldn't imo) this got me in sort of a dilemma to resolve a remote conversation on my forthcoming comics work. I figured out they could have basic Nokia-like things for calls so I went with it. The sort of phone we all had in the 90s. #kidscomics

Coming to think of it, this theme is quite present through Pixar/Disney’s Turning Red, which made it clearer for me it’s a wider cultural thing.
