#WIPSnips Doing more off feel than the word itself.

Her door opened. The noise shattering the silence of her room. Down below would be in chaos by now. Hidden chaos. Controlled. A storm and dance well-known even if they were caught off guard.

“Mother,” she greeted.

Mother was in her formal wear. Perfect with not a thread or hair or speck of makeup out of place. A storm grey dress with silver detail of lightning bolts.

“Harriet,” she sighed in relief. “There’s been a change of plans for today. You are to stay in here until the earl has left. He shouldn’t be here too long. Supposedly he’s merely passing through before moving on to visit with his cousin.”

First vampire project of this scale. I've dabbled with them before but have spent more of the past four years working on a long YA series and I wanted a little break. It's been a lot of fun so far.

#WIPSnips. I don't have any kind of lizard or reptile in this story so I opted for a section about someone being cold-blooded.

He spun her slowly. Far slowly than how they would do so in a real dance with music and dozens of couples around them. She kept her footing through it and braced her hand back on his shoulder when it was done.

"You're not that bad," he told her.

His skin was almost close enough for her to touch. She could tell it would be cool to the touch. Not corpselike cold but cooler than hers. Her Mother had spent so long thinking she was feverish when she wasn't.

"Far from perfect though."

#WIPSnips 'Compared' is close enough. Hard to have this kind of story without some semblance of stakes.

"After me there is no heir to the throne. I hope Prince Mani and Princess Camarilla are granted the gift soon but I cannot place that many lives on a mere wish. I have three second cousins. All theoretically equal claims after me. If they fight over it everyone loses."

The state of their marriage didn't matter. He wouldn't have picked her if not for that.

"Compared to that, what's a few dance lessons?" She considered dryly.

"You are to be my wife. We will be spending a lot of time at gatherings. Most will involve dancing. I won't let anyone speak poorly of you."

His wife. He was certain he will still want this after a whole year of things that were wrong with her? She had an infinite number of faults and not all of them could be solved by lessons and practice. She would never be pretty enough. No garments or dresses could fix that.

#WIPSnips I don't have 'rice' so here's a segment about some crops and food that a region eats.

"What do they typically eat at Surge's Break?"

"Fruit trees, crops that take well to the high water table, the banks of the Sanguine swell when it rains."

He knew of the Sanguine. The largest river that ran through their realm and was terribly prone to flooding in places. Surge's Break was on a hill that overlooked it. Fish wasn't a rarity despite the different varieties.

"What was your favorite dish at home?" he tried.

"I was fond of a chickpea spread we would have with lunch. It went well with the flatbreads our kitchen would make. The yeasted breads you have here are nice."

That was terrifying. No wonder he wanted to improve her dancing as much as possible before that. They perhaps only had a day and a half. A decade of preparation wouldn't be enough for her. "If it would please Lord Arden."

His face did that thing again. The strange expression she couldn't place. "It would, far more than letters from merchants complaining about fulfilling contracts they signed."

#WIPSnips Petal is currently used 11 times in this story. I suspect that number will triple before this story is done. This one is fun.

A ballroom, she realized. That was the only reason the doors were this intricate. Twice Arden Rosethorne's height and made almost entirely of stained glass. Patterns of green thorns with droplets of blood at the end. A massive rose in the center with petals in all colors.

White marble floor tiles with grout lines that looked like thorny vines. Pillars of granite wrapped in twisted metal in the shape of growing vines and flowers. They looked sharp enough to cut herself on.

#WIPSnips, couldn't find 'injury' but the idea is there. What's a vampire story without a little blood?

She was in her nightclothes, gloveless and hair braided for whatever amount of sleep the spirits would grant her. She reached out for a rose, freeing it from the vase as a single petal drifted down. The pain of the prick was so sudden she barely noticed it, still resting the flower in her hand as she inspected the damage.

A bead of crimson swelled on her index finger. The smell of it reminding her not of sugary pastries but of foulness and the duck pond after a flood. She wiped it away only for it to return quickly.

She returned the rose to the vase, nestled snug like it needed sleep too. Her blood was still on her hand, now staining the pale green petals with droplets of red. It didn't even hurt, just made a mess. She was still bleeding.

It wouldn't be healed by morning.

#WIPSnips This one is far less cute than other sections....but I needed to show where Arden gets his blood supply somehow.

He handed his horse to the stable hand, a boy barely old enough to leave his parents side. Rowan was a calm stead though, used to the journey and the stables near the jailhouse. The captain of the guard was already there, in his armor and standing stiffer than an arrow.

"Earl Rosethorne," he was greeted.

"Details," he commanded.

"We were contacted by a Madam near the docks after one of her girls went missing. Matched the description of the wife and when we found the body it was mutilated in the same manner."

#WIPSnips Ink well is the most interesting one I have. Communication is important with your partner and they're trying.

Because of course not, telling him a full no could put Dorin's potential matches in jeopardy. So they'd stalled, emphasized her lack of worthiness and desirability. She didn't have the beauty to make up for the lack of societal value. She would be an embarrassment to nearly anyone.

"You have me at a severe disadvantage," she admitted. "I know barely a drop compared to you."

Lord Arden lowered the letter to the desk. The parchment pure white and perfectly clean. The kind of perfection one would expect from a royal missive. He stood up without so much as shaking the ink in the well and moved through the room deliberately. Graceful and confident in equal measure. "What would my fiance wish to know?"

#WIPSnips My male lead needs to chill out. My guy you have to wait for the wedding and that's not for another year.

He used her heartbeat as a rhythm for the dance. Their steps in time and almost in sync, hers very lightly delayed from nerves. Her hand was firm on his shoulder, gripping him tight like she was afraid he'd let her go. It was a firmer grip than her hands looked capable of.

His fiance was stronger than she let on.

He shifted his hand on her back, giving her enough time to know what he was about to do. He did not want to startle her. The changes in her heart were becoming easier to anticipate. He braced her against his arm and dipped her low. Enough that her neck was stretched out and fully exposed to him. Her erratic pulse visible under her skin and breathing unstable as she looked up at him. Soft skin and warm veins just out of reach.

"I've made my peace with it. We are what we are. There's little to be gained for wishing to be something else."

"I prefer you as you are," Lord Arden commented in a low tone she didn't think she was meant to hear.

Her face felt warm, her heart pounding even faster and hard enough she could hear it.

His eyes went wider by barely a hint but it was enough to confirm her suspicion. "I meant...if the spirits have handed us these circumstances there's no reason not to capitalize on them and make the most of it."

#WIPSnips Mutual observation from our freshly growing couple. So cute.

The cloche was raised reveling a plate that had a fruit tart next to a steak of smoked and cured swordfish. The tart was filled with star fruit, mangoes, and strawberries glazed with guava syrup.

She looked relieved more than interested. She met his gaze. Observing him as he observed her. They both had so much to learn about each other. As researched as he was there were limits to what one could learn about someone they never truly met.

"Admittedly, the whole thing had slipped my mind until I came to conclusion that marrying a dhampir would solve the problems facing our realm. Perhaps your creation was an act by the spirits to help us."

She didn't feel blessed or like a blessing by forces beyond the veil. She felt sick again. She had been born an accident, doomed to forever be a footnote at best. She was not the one destined to be by any ruler's side. Miss Indigo had been more vampiric, the true blood clear in her straight black hair and fangs and tall compact frame. Her eyes the only true sign she was any part human.

#WIPSnips A longer one this time because I felt like the context helps. Being engaged is stressful.

Harriet took a cake and a sandwich. The bread was soft and the beets were cooked to tenderness with a hint of salt and sweetness she recognized as honey. He was dipping his cake into the tea. Spirits. She needed to remind herself he was a prince in all but name. His highness did most of the ruling as the king's health faltered and Lord Arden was his heir.

When they married, she would be a princess.

Maybe not in title. Maybe not even in form. But she would still need to hold herself to that standard. When the announcements were made public his highness and his wife would be there.

He took a bite of the cake without spilling either a drop or crumb. As casual as he was there was still a grace to him. A precision in his movements that felt calculated in that same effortless way her mother conducted herself. Well-practiced over decades.

#WIPSnips from my vampire nobles dark romance thing. (I have a working title but not fully ready to share it.) I had a couple of good options but this was my favorite.

She wasn’t wearing the ring. Not yet. It wouldn’t do until the announcements could be made through formal channels. That would have to wait a month. Let the rumors of their courtship float around. Showing it had been part of the negotiations. To allow the Malstroms to fully grasp how serious his intent was. Had been from the start.

Let no one dare suggest he wasn’t anything but committed to this choice.

Likely but not because of her pounding heart. It would be a marked improvement over being bored of merchants complaining about ship wages. And the contents of the black envelope likely involved her anyway. She didn't need to know that until he'd had a chance to read it. There was also a chance it was a reminder from Camarilla to attend the First Night ball.
