I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

One of my favorite foods growing up was my grandmother's "grits au gratin", and it turns out it's just grits and velveeta.

A lot of the time I feel like my whiteness, my relative wealth, and my feminist family have protected me from the worst aspects of patriarchy. But they alone can't give me a field of medical knowledge that knows how to treat my body.

I know we scientists have already been tracking all of this, but some parts of it still hit me hard. www.npr.org/2026/09/24/n... Specifically the cuts to funding research on women's health, against the backdrop of how much women have already been left out of our medical knowledge.

I am a 2nd or 3rd gen academic, and I think it's important to acknowledge the implicit cultural capital I got from that (which was tremendous) AND some perspective is that I have friends who were given their family's business for their careers.

When I was a student in a seminar, a professor once yelled "Steve! Go get a coffee!" at a student who was apparently falling asleep, and he promptly got up and came back 10 minutes later with coffee. Epic moment, I've only dreamed of being such a boss.

I buy the claim that there's a strong career path in clinical psych for people who want attention and money and don't care about doing good science. If anything, I think social psych lacks the PhD-to-guru pipeline option that draws people out without requiring an academic appointment.

Claiming that "predicts" implies a causal claim. My turn signal predicts which way I'm going to turn. My turn signal does not cause me to turn.

It's this, and it also the fact that I will never get clear information about COVID and flu risk in my area, and transplant patients depend on checking drug serial numbers against a ProPublica list to make sure their anti-rejection meds are effective. FDA and CDC cannot do their jobs. Who will?

Whenever I get a few extra seconds with elected officials in IL, I tell them that what I need from the state is the capacity to pick up where the Fed is failing in terms of tracking outbreaks and monitoring food and drug safety.

I, like many faculty, have been skeptical of FIRE's genuine support for free speech, so I'm pleased to see they're supporting the lawsuit here against DHS for harassing a man for writing a stern email to a DHS official:https://www.npr.org/2026/07/06/nx-s1-5883784/dhs-ice-critic-lawsuit-free-speech

Yeah. Since I don't supervise PhD students, this is not my circus, but it is suprising to me that none of the arguments for going test-optional in the first place have been part of the conversations I've been hearing about bringing them back.

ICE has abducted dozens of people in my area in Chicago in just the past two weeks. I felt some poignancy yesterday when Obama praised the people of Minneapolis for standing up for their neighbors while there are people still doing the same right here.

One of my students told me that they wouldn't imagine segregating their friend groups by fashion aesthetics. I question how broad that is, but maybe they don't see aesthetic preferences in general as being linked to identity.

I think students either mistake my questions that ask them to collectively struggle with a difficult idea for an expectation that they provide a perfect response, or they refuse to engage with that effort. I think the latter, since I'll clearly say "This is hard, let's puzzle through it together!"

But I allow all tech in lectures. Our big team-taught class has banned tech in lectures, but I don't think thats appreciably increased engagement, and mostly just means another opportunity for students to feel policed.

It's becoming more common in our department. I've really like it in seminars for increasing how present students are. For more introductory seminars, it was clearly necessary to keep students from using AI to generate things to say in discussion.

So it's a balance between making the authors wait an additional few months *just to find reviewers* and potentially accidentally having more reviewers than necessary. Which do you want as an author?
000
Alysson Light @alylight.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Yeah, but this massively increases the timeline for reviewing because in my experience person 1 never responds, and so we wait until the system times them out (over two weeks) before contacting person 2, who might also leave us on read.
