Common green darners are one of the few dragonflies you can photograph midflight without getting incredibly lucky; they'll often hover in one spot for extended periods of time.

A black-crowned night heron perched atop a post in the middle of the marsh during a foggy sunrise. I love how that red eye kind of glows. #birds

The same American bittern from a different angle, this time peeking over its shoulder at me. Normally pretty secretive, every once in a while these guys surprise you by just hanging out in the relative open. #birds

Is it a bird or is it cotton candy on a stick? An American bittern looking especially round standing on one leg at the edge of the marsh as it stares straight at the camera. #birds

A female southern two-striped walking stick with a smaller male on her back. When a male finds a mate, he climbs atop her and generally stays there 'til death: this way he helps protect the eggs and prevents other males from taking his place. She gets the pleasure of carrying him everywhere.

I showed up to the wetlands too late to catch the sunrise, which was beautiful, but I did think the post-sunrise sky was quite pretty in its own right, especially over its reflection in the water. Just a quick picture taken with my phone.

Came across almost two dozen recently hatched American alligators lying in the mud. A whole bunch of them were lying atop each other while snoozing amidst some marsh pennywort.

Yep. As they age the blue on the tail and contrast on the striping on their bodies fade, and they become sort of a reddish-brown color. Here's an adult broad-headed skink I found wedged in between two trees that had grown closely together.

Alex Nelson @alxnelson.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
I believe this is a juvenile broad-headed skink warming itself up on the concrete. There are three species of skink in Florida that look exactly alike, and it's quite difficult telling them apart. But the blue tail makes the juvenile part quite easy to determine at least.

Looked through the trees at the edge of the marsh and found this face staring back at me: a tricolored heron, enjoying the shade and trying to cool itself through gular fluttering, where it will open its beak and vibrate the muscles in its throat, their equivalent to a dog's panting. #birds
