Also not a coincidence that this happened in Perth, where two disabled children were just murdered by their parents in a murder-suicide that the police repeatedly described as "non-violent." The media is largely empathetic towards the parents and continues to paint the murder as a mercy killing.

Within 9 days of the Bondi Shooting the first steps were being taken in implementing new laws, and everyone even tangentially related to the perpetrators had been investigated. And this time it took 9 days to figure out whether or not throwing a bomb into a crowd even counted as Terrorism.

It took 9 days for a bomb being thrown into a crowd to be declared a Terrorist Attack, and we STILL don't know the name of the man who did it, out of fear for HIS safety. The bodies weren't even cold by the time the names, faces and life histories of both Bondi Shooters were being reported.

Also if any of the Russian Bulls DO manage to surpass J.J. in size then there's a pretty good chance they'd also break the record for largest known Orca, which is currently at 9.8m and 10,000kg.

Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 02/02/2026
The record right is J.J. the Gray Whale at 9.4m and 8,700kg. That's still smaller than the largest recorded wild Orca, but not by much. I don't think we'll see multiple bulls surpass it, like we will/have with Tilikum's record, but I wouldn't be surprised if one particularly big boy got there.

Everyone knows it's inevitable that some of the Russian Bulls will overtake Tilikum for largest captive orca (I think Tyson and Nakhod probably have already) but I just realised that it is entirely possible one could become the largest Marine Mammal ever held in captivity.

Lest we forget that in the days after the Bondi Stabbing MULTIPLE high ranking police officers insisted the attacker had not targeted women. Even though 14/16 of those stabbed were women, the only men hurt were security guards trying to stop him, and he's on camera ignoring men during the attack.

In light of Recent Events I'm thinking about how in the hours after the Bondi Stabbing when people assumed it was a Muslim attacking the broader public the word 'Terrorism' was widely used, only to vanish entirely the second it was revealed to be a white guy from Queensland who wanted to kill women.

I mean obviously AI is an option too but I cannot see them going through the time, money and effort to collect and import sperm as long as they've got bulls on site. So they'll just fall back on inbreeding (again) with Teno or play Genetic Russian Roulette with Tekoa and Adan.

Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
Loro Parque's breeding program is Extra Fucked now that Wikie and Keijo are seemingly off the table. Their best option is Tekoa and we've just got to pray he never has a daughter. Because you just know LP would breed her until she met the same fate as her Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.

I get plenty of bugs at my window at night, and normally trying to ID them is a bit of a bitch. But it's hard to mistake a Clanger, even from a shit angle like this!

I will die on the hill that Happy Feet is actually a really poignant metaphor about the Othering of minority groups and how it is an inherently nonsensical system pushed by religion that disadvantages society as a whole, not just the specific minority group being Othered.

More of my backlog of Zoo photos, this time of Ravi! This boy was transferred to Adelaide Zoo back in 2022, where he immediately made headlines by escaping his enclosure a week after his arrival, being on the run for 2 days, and then turning up in the Botanic Gardens.

Talk about a glow up man. Wish I'd gotten more photos of their current models because genuinely, there isn't a single bad one. And they're integrated so beautifully with artwork, real fossils and fossil reconstructions (with clear labelling to distinguish them too!)

Found a bunch of old photos from a Dinosaur exhibit at the Queensland Museum from circa 2012 and it only makes me appreciate the beauty of their current models even more because wtf are these 😭

I can't say for sure, but I'd put money on it just been a mistake by Cetabase. That site is so full of errors that it's borderline unusual unless you're looking for information from no later than the year 2000 about long-term captive animals in US facilities.

Hi! Sorry, I just saw this lol. I've tried to do a bit of digging, and though I can't be certain thanks to newspapers .com now being practically unusable without a paid subscription, I can't find any evidence of a Gray Whale stranding in California in August 1984, let alone being taken to SeaWorld.

Actually a great time for exotic species in Aussie zoos full stop tbh. Coati recently imported and Pygmy Hippo, Common Hippo and Brazilian Tapir set to come in the next ~24 months, reviving 4 species all doomed to 'extinction' within our zoos! Not to mention all the Elephant news the last 15 months!

Melbourne Zoo has imported a female Philippine Crocodile and has plans to breed the species in the next few years!! Combined with ARP's recent imports this is such a great time for exotic reptiles in Aussie zoos

Watching videos of the new ONE dolphin show at Sea World, and um. Excuse me. Who are you? I know Sea World is DOG SHIT at transparency, but how tf do you have a whole ass baby dolphin for the first time in almost a decade and not say a word about it?

Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
I've only ever made 2 trips to Sea World with a proper camera (and one of those was only like 45 minutes) so I have an upsetting shortage of good photos from there compared to other facilities, but I do have some. Here's my favourites of Mishka from June of 2020.

New Years Update: Some of these transfers have been confirmed complete, however all current evidence suggests that 2026 has begun with many animals, including Pinnipeds and Dolphins, still stuck at the Miami SeaQuarium :/

Last time I mentioned this a couple people threw a fit so just for the record I do not think animals care about what day keepers celebrate their birthday, I do not think this a pressing issue for captive cetaceans, and I do not think you are a bad person for celebrating birthdays on January 1st.
010
Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 03/01/2026
Celebrating by arrival date eliminates the issue of multiple animals having the same "birthday," and makes dodging the topic of capture easier and subtly shifts the blame for it onto someone else by implying they were at (and thus captured by) another facility first, even if that's not true.
100
Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 03/01/2026
In my opinion if facilities want a dedicated day to celebrate a "birthday" for a captured cetacean they should chose the day that animal arrived at the park. Present it as "we don't know the actual day their life began, so we choose to celebrate the day their life with us began." That's sweet.

Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 03/01/2026
Idk. It just feels icky and dishonest to me. Like. January 1st is almost certainly not Corky's birthday. We don't know when Corky's birthday is. That is just a date arbitrarily chosen because it's the time the year rolls over and thus marks the start of another year she has spent alive.

Amity @always-amity.bsky.social · 03/01/2026
Always hate seeing marine parks celebrate the "birthday" of captured Cetaceans on January 1st. It's better than celebrating on their capture date but that bar is in hell so it's not like jumping it is an achievement.

Like. Jesus fucking Christ. It's a VERY recently released video too, so there's really no excuse. There's plenty of history to this place, you don't have to talk about the colonisation. But if you are then don't Passive Voice a murder that was committed as part of a fucking genocide?!!? Holy shit.

Got a video in my recommended about the history of somewhere used to live. Piqued my interest but not even two minutes in the murder of an Indigenous man during the colonisation of the area is described as "the overseer fired his rifle and the Indigenous man was killed." Immediately clicked off.

Recovered a few of my old Australia Zoo photos (circa 2013) and there's some gems in here, but highlights absolutely have to be finding the singular photos I have of Chief and Fatboy. I spent the last few years thinking these were fully lost for good, so I'm really glad to have unearthed them.

It can be easy to forget sometimes, but Katina was not just a mother. She was a daughter too. She was once a little, orange, floppy-finned baby tucked up against her mothers side. And it's likely that for the first time in almost half a centaury, she's back by her side again.

Going through my old zoo photos and I gotta say, maybe I've been too harsh on the Meerkats and Otters. I don't spend much - if any - time with them when I'm at Australia Zoo, since small exotic animals really aren't my jam, but I've got quite a few nice pictures in here.

After several long years I've got access to my old laptop hard drive, meaning I've recovered literally thousands of old photos that I thought were lost for good. Now to spend the next week or so sorting through them all to find what's worth transferring over.
