One reason why I am a nut for devolution is this: central government ministers shouldn't spend their working hours thinking about the correct design of bus stops.

A locally designed and delivered approach would create an opportunity for more relational, citizen-centred supported that carries less stigma and baggage than JCP. There's lots more in the report on why we think a devolved model is preferable & how to get there restate.substack.com/p/a-p45-for-...

4️⃣ Central government's main role is minimum standards, performance transparency, and evidence-gathering and sharing 5️⃣ There should be a system of incentives – such as allowing areas to keep a share of the resulting benefit savings – that rewards places for successfully supporting people into work
100
Alex Walker @alwalker.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
2️⃣ DWP provides a national AI-enabled digital offer for those who are likely to find work quickly 3️⃣ A digitally-enabled triaging process is used when an individual begins a claim to help identify their complexity of need and likelihood of long-term unemployment
100
Alex Walker @alwalker.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Rather than reforming JCP, we suggest replacing it with a different approach: 1️⃣ Mayoral authorities take over primary responsibility and the budget for in-person, joined-up support for those on income-related benefits such as Universal Credit, and as well as those who aren't on benefits

Really pleased that today we've published "No Job for the Centre: the case for devolving employment support"! We argue that to be coherent, the devolution of employment support should include the services currently provided by DWP through Jobcentre Plus - and that JCP should be scrapped.
