These are all very good reasons indeed, but it seems the point often said of "we need QKD, Qcomms, etc... because of Shor's algorithm" is at least a lot more nuanced

Álvaro M. Alhambra @alvalhambra.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
Do you mean they know how to break RSA, PQC or QKD? In any case my vague impression the few times Ive talked to crypto people is that things are more nuanced than it is often said

Álvaro M. Alhambra @alvalhambra.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
I would like to see a clearer high-level justification for quantum communications and QKD, why is it not easier to just transfer to post-quantum crypto? (Like what google seem to be doing)

There's a longer more ellaborate answer too, maybe I should write it down as a blog post or something like that 😄

Also if we understand Gibbs states we can hope to understand what happens when going to lower temperatures, it may be that these dissipative algorithms are also a good idea if you want to probe ground states and their excitations

Álvaro M. Alhambra @alvalhambra.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
Indeed ground states are more important for many applications, but a lot of interesting physics still happens at higher temperature, and also sampling from them can be interesting for optimization

This is an area with a lot of potential, both in theory and experiments, and we are learning a lot about open quantum systems in the process. I look forward to seeing what dissipative QC can bring to the table.

The most interesting idea I've learnt this week: arxiv.org/abs/2311.10304 In a dissipative setting, if one takes the thermodynamic limit first and then the limit of zero dissipation, you are left with a Liouvillian gap related to the relaxation of the closed system dynamics

This was, in our mind, one of the most technically interesting open questions in the context of robustness to errors in many body quantum simulation, as put forward in e.g. arxiv.org/abs/2212.04924 - hopefully this further shows how simulating long range models is an interesting avenue to explore!
