There was a CG memo in 2003 requesting a review related to this... as far as I know, nothing happened with it at that time. The CG could have and should have done something sooner. It's disgraceful that it took this long to figure it out. Link to PDF with more info. www.facebook.com/groups/55933...

(5/5) Today, we honor the brave women who have joined the USCG in the 83 years since 1942. They've saved countless lives and helped make the CG what it is today. Some further reading: www.history.uscg.mil/Browse-by-To...

(2/5) New SPARs both enlisted and commissioned as officers in the CG, replacing male CG members at shore stations so they could be released to sea duty. Over the course of WWII, over 10,000 women would volunteer for this service.

(1/5) On this day in 1942, the US Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARs, was created - the name stood for Semper Paratus - Always Ready, the CG's motto. Although not well-known, the SPARs were an important part of the service in WWII!

(1/2) Humorous photo (thank you @clawofknowledge.bsky.social), but a serious message. Reminder that you're not alone during this shutdown. If you're in the CG or are a dependent, & need financial assistance, Navy Fed and USAA both have shutdown loan programs & CGMA is also there for you.

The Coast Guard is joining the witch hunt for people speaking out negatively against Charlie Kirk. I have no further information on this, and do not know what or who they're referring to. Be safe out there, all. Reminder to those in uniform, your words and actions can have unintended consequences.

Thank you for sharing! And yes, the CG has a sizable presence in Bahrain, as a base of operations for any activities in the Middle East. Here's the post for those who don't want to have to deal with clicking on a link to Xitter:

Updates from Crowley: the first photo, update #2, was released yesterday, while the second photo, update #3, was released within the past hour. The arrest mentioned appears to be the captain of the cargo ship, for "gross negligence manslaughter." See article below. news.sky.com/story/man-ar...
CROWLEY
UPDATE #2 ON STENA IMMACULATE INCIDENT IN THE NORTH SEA
Monday, March 10, 2025 - At approximately 10 a.m. UTC/5 a.m. EDT on March 10, 2025, while stationary and anchored off the North Sea coast near Hull, United Kingdom, the Crowley-managed tanker Stena Immaculate was struck on its port side by the container ship Solong. As a result, at least one cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel was ruptured.
Crowley is working closely with response agencies including the HM Coastguard to secure the vessel in a restricted safety area and initiate spill containment response. All 23 Crowley mariners that were on board are safe and accounted for with no reported injuries at this time.
"As with all our operations, Crowley's priority is to protect the safety of mariners, and the environment. We greatly appreciate the quick actions and support of the U.K. authorities, rescue workers and others to today's incident and remain committed to working with them on the continued response efforts," said Cal Hayden, vice president, Crowley global ship management.
The Stena Immaculate is managed by Crowley through a joint venture with owner Stena Bulk USA. In 2023, the tanker was selected by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to serve in its Tanker Security Program. While under charter on this voyage for the Military Sealift Command, the tanker was anchored while it awaited berth availability at the Port of Killingholme, where it was due to make a standard delivery of fuel as part of a routine service under this program when it was struck.
At this stage, it is unclear what volume of fuel may have been released as a result of the incident. At the time it was struck, the 183-meter (596-foot) Stena Immaculate was carrying 220,000 barrels of jet fuel in 16 segregated cargo tanks. Crowley is supporting the relevant authorities in the UK who are investigating the incident and will defer to them for any further questions on potential cause.CROWLEY
UPDATE #3 ON STENA IMMACULATE INCIDENT IN THE NORTH SEA
Monday, March 11, 2025; 1600 EDT - Crowley continues to work closely with U.K. agencies to support the incident response, salvage and environmental impact mitigation operations resulting from container ship Solong striking the Crowley-managed tanker Stena Immaculate while at anchor on Monday, March 10.
A fire onboard the Stena Immaculate has greatly diminished with no visible flames. Crowley is continuing to assist response efforts led by the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The vessel is stationary at anchor and being monitored by Crowley representatives, partners and government authorities, and we are working alongside partners during initial salvage activities. In the meantime, we are prioritizing supporting the health and wellbeing of our mariners in Grimsby and the response effort to mitigate environmental threats.
It remains uncertain at this time what volume of fuel may have been released as a result of the incident, but initial review shows impacts have been limited due to exposure to the fire and evaporation of the Jet A1 fuel. In addition, U.K agencies are closely monitoring air quality and any possible public health impacts resulting onshore. Both are currently measuring low or within normal levels.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident and its impacts, and we defer to them for any question about the cause. The individual arrested by local police is not a member of the Crowley crew.

(14/14) With an active duty workforce smaller than the NYPD, the CG is already stretched thin. ALL responsibilities of the CG will be compromised by a misguided focus on border patrol & migrant interdiction, & lives will be endangered by the lack of resources across the CG’s other crucial missions.

(13/14) The newest actions of the administration aim to pull the CG even farther from its roots, taking the emphasis off life-saving and putting it onto law enforcement. This is not in the spirit of the United States Coast Guard.

(12/14) With the exception of engagement in wartime alongside other military branches, the CG's mission has historically been one of peace and protection. Within the past few decades, this mission has shifted towards a focus on law enforcement, drug and migrant interdiction, and border patrol.

(11/14) However, port security has been a USCG responsibility since 1917, when the "Captain of the Port" was designated responsible for the security at their location. Coast Guardsmen have also served in every major conflict since the USCG was founded, alongside the other branches of the military.

(10/14) The use of USCG assets for law enforcement dates back to the 1989 National Defense Authorization Act, when the CG began performing drug interdiction activities. Antiterrorism responsibilities were added in 2002 under the Maritime Transportation Safety Act.

(9/14) These missions preserve the safety of those in the marine industries, and the CG is directly responsible for saving lives in the form of SAR operations and preventing marine casualties through inspection and through ensuring the proficiency of those working in technical roles on boats.

(7/14) Although the CG no longer collects customs payments, all CG officers are "officers of the customs" and can enforce customs law. The role of the Life-Saving Service has become the Search and Rescue functions that the CG is perhaps best known for.

(6/14) The CG would also take up marine vessel documentation in 1946. This rounds out the full complement of agencies that became the USCG, and establishes the initial set of missions. Most of these missions have continued till today, and are reflected in the modern structure of the USCG.

(5/14) The Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, established in 1884 as the Bureau of Navigation, also contributed to the USCG. In 1942, it was split, with merchant vessel documentation moved to US Customs and marine vessel inspection and merchant mariner licensing transferred to the USCG.

(4/14) In 1939, the US Lighthouse Service, which had been created in 1910, was also merged into the CG. This transferred lighthouse keeping responsibilities, as well as the maintenance of other aids to navigation, to the USCG.

(3/14) The other half of what would become the CG was the United States Life-Saving Service. It was founded in 1848 as an agency that formalized what were previously private local efforts to save victims of shipwrecks. These two organizations merged in 1915, under the Treasury, and became the USCG.

(2/14) Looking way back to shortly after the Revolutionary War, one of the predecessors to the USCG was initially founded as the Revenue-Marine in 1790. Originally tasked with collecting customs payments at ports in the US, it became known as the US Revenue Cutter Service by the 1860s.

The Honor of a Lifetime
Feb 21, 2025 at 6:26 PM

Team Navy:

It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your 33rd CNO, and the first NROTC graduate to do so. I joined for free college and books, but I stayed for our mission, the opportunity to serve something greater than myself, and the chance to be part of amazing teams in the world's most lethal fighting force: America's Warfighting Navy.

Thank you for what you - our Active and Reserve Sailors, our Civilians, and our families - do every day in support of our Nation. What you do matters, and I remain grateful for your service and your sacrifice.

We are America's Warfighting Navy and America is counting on us to deter aggression, defend our National security interests, and preserve our way of life. We operate from seabed to space, around the globe and around the clock. Our mission continues, unabated and undisrupted. Set stretch goals, embrace the red, use data, always learn, and #GSD.

There is no time to waste.

Jim, Isabel, and ADM Lisa M. Franchetti, CNO33, send.

All Ahead Flank!

In a caption at the bottom, the following:
Leaders have been strongly encouraged not to share Adm Franchetti's email. So just in case you missed her farewell where she focuses on WARFIGHTING and continuing the MISSION, here it is.
