My comic about the deportation of the Kalmyks 81 years ago today is up on Crucial Comix! Please have a read and learn about the ethnic purges that Russia is happy to sweep under the rug. Read it in full here: www.crucialcomix.com/comic/operat...

Page 1 of a 10 page history comic called Operation Ulusy. The colour scheme and style of the illustrations take inspiration from Central Asian textile art, particularly Kalmyk embroidery.
Panel 1 shows a Kalmyk mother and two children looking worried at two partially seen people in military uniform. It is snowing and the family is bundled up and carrying their belongings. Around them, and throughout the comic, embroidery motifs from Central Asia convey their rallying spirit in this trying time. The caption reads: “On the 28th of December 1943, the deportation of the Kalmyks began.”

Panel 2 reads “Driven into cattle cars, 93,000 people (virtually the whole ethnic Kalmyk population) were exiled.” The mother watches as uniformed men point the way to cattle cars in the snow.

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

An infographic. There are six panels.

1. "Slow internet. Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images." a drawing shows a phone with poor signal, and alt text is visible where the image should have loaded.

2. "Findabillity. Alt text helps to search content." A drawing shows someone searching 'dog with banana' and a post is shown underneath without the words 'dog' or 'banana'. It is implied to be part of the alt text.

3. "Screen readers. Alt is read out to people using text-to-speech software". There is a drawing of the output a screen-reader would show when viewing an image with alt text on bluesky.

4. "Translation. Alt text can be translated". A drawing shows a post being translated. The alt text is also translated into german.

5. "Readability. Text in images can be made legible" There is a drawing of some truly awful handwriting inside a speech bubble. The alt text clarifies what the text is supposed to say.

6. "Disambiguation. Description helps clarify intent." There is a drawing of a post with a picture of a creature. This is styled after the famous optical illusion of a rabbit and a duck. The alt text clarifies that the animal is a rabbit. It definitely looks more like a duck.

Art is more than just entertainment, it’s a communication directly through emotion, if you do it right you can reach people heart. Art can and should be political. Cause ideas and messages delivered through emotions can get deeper

2024 jыл – Улуу jыл In Altai culture we have 12-years cycle. Each year symbolized by some of 12 animals, which are the patrons. For example 2024 year's patron animal is a Dragon (uluu) Usually Altai new year begins in the end of January/February or even March. And also we have fierce debate about

Altai girl hold a piala (a altaian cup?) with tea, and there is dragon on background and altai ornament
