Pepper, our very smallest and most alert sheep. Usually seen mowing the fence line or keeping watch outside the shelter while the others sleep. She enjoys overseeing chores like filling water buckets, setting fences, and checking on tree tubes.

Playing with plants again! Getting the hot callus pipe going. This is pipe insulation with a heated cable inside, on a thermostat set to 78F. Used to maintain heat at graft unions so they callus while plants stay dormant, often for difficult to graft nut trees like hazel, walnut, pecan & more! 🐿️

The two varieties are pollen compatible, so with a successful graft, and if the seedling is allowed to sucker as hazels do, this should produce multi-variety, “self-pollinating” hazelnut bushes.

Deep freeze is over and finally a chance to start pruning the orchard! Lots of nice Goumi cuttings and maybe some scions to graft on invasive autumn olive. Lil Pepper looking fluffy, not sure she noticed the -25F wind chill yesterday.
