My unasked advise for people looking to get into indie animation, is to figure out what you can and can't do, then base your production off of that. You just gotta work within your means and aim for what you can actually do!

You ever look at Japanese production storyboards and wonder "what the fuck are we (in the USA) even doing" because all's I can say is damn. The level of detail is quick thumbnails at best and that's all you need. Fuck the USA production expectations for storyboards. Stop making us make comic books.

I'm an animation guy and I'll always be an animation guy, but the idea that any given comic is just trapped in a lesser medium until it's animated is so offensive to me

One of my strongest opinions about “ indie animation “ and making things in general is that you should enjoy doing it to some extent.

I think when you get into indie-animation, you should be ready to pay people or barter then, not later. Volunteer labor shouldnt have deadlines. YOU SHOULD HAVE A JOB or do alot of shit yourself. The promise of merch stores, "royalties" and multiple projects? Good for clout. Bad for business.

Cool bug facts! Whenever you see “indie animation studios” announce multiple shows and series being made without any prior establishment, budget, or income to put into it (and i mean big income) odds are they wont see the light of day and is a scam for free labor and piggybacking off others work!

2024 WTTW Chicago Public TV article on Illinois' biggest Republican political donors:

“…Trump’s Top Donors

With a combined $10 million donation to the Make America Great Again Super PAC, billionaires Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein are the second-biggest backers of Trump’s reelection bid — though their contribution has been dwarfed by the $75 million kicked in by banking heir Timothy Mellon.

The Uihleins, Lake Forest residents and owners of the shipping products company Uline, are longtime conservative political donors. Uline, which was once headquartered in Illinois, moved in 2010 to Wisconsin — also home to Schlitz Brewing, to which Richard Uihlein is an heir.

The Uihleins have long been active in Illinois politics. They supported former Gov. Bruce Rauner in his successful 2014 election bid. In 2018, they backed his unsuccessful challenger in the Republican gubernatorial primary, then-state Rep. Jeanne Ives. They’ve also supported U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Springfield), who drew widespread condemnation for approvingly quoting Adolf Hitler in a 2021 speech; failed Illinois gubernatorial and congressional candidate Darren Bailey; and U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria).”

Gonna be real, I kinda rushed through the Quartz Quest ep 3 animatic a year ago, and Im high key paying the price for it now. Always spend a little extra time polishing and checking that animatic, it will make everything smoother. (I have learned this before but sometimes u gotta haller it in.)

a thing I love about indie production is never having to sell an executive on anything, or reassure them it'll come together by making each step 'presentable'. my storyboards can be scribbles. the colour keys can be blobs. I can trust the process.

Small rant, while It's awesome to see more support for indie animation these day, there seems to be this unrealistic expectation that all these projects must fit that polished TV budget animation look™️ in order to be deemed 'good.' (1/3)
