I’ve anticipated this album to be an opus on par with or even surpassing Emotion and I can quite honestly say that assessment has remained. I gotta listen thru everything some more especially the Night side but my god this album just so thoughtful and intellectual and purposeful.

and not only is it ambitious but it is very inarguably successful! is the album perfect? not completely, with a project as expansive as this there are bound to be some weaker parts. but there are also so many INCREDIBLY high points that it doesn’t really matter.

The dual album concept of Day and Night is that idea really pushed to a limit I feel. it’s Carly coming to the table and saying “I have all these songs and all these concepts and I want to showcase just how wide of a spectrum my artistry can occupy” and I have to give kudos for how ambitious that is

And as a result of that she’s able to dip her toes into new sounds and fresh perspectives without compromising on delivering things that her audience loves her for and relies on her for

OVERALL I think Carly Rae Jepsen has very easily done it again. I’ve said it before, I love a musical project where it’s obvious the artist knows exactly who they are. Carly has ALWAYS known exactly who she is as an artist and what kinds of stories she wants to tell.

That being said, Never Let A Good Thing Go, Patience Power Passion, Near Or Far, and No Labels, I Love You were all very much standouts.

Ok so after the first listen I think I can immediately say the Day side was more impactful for me than the Night side. There is plenty of extremely well executed stuff on the Night side, but I find it all blends together a bit more than Day where each song has more of an individual identity

Again, it’s experimental without being outlandish. Carly is an expert in maneuvering that balance. An excellent closer tbh.

There are so many songs with interesting harmonic work on this album and this one is particularly cool

In general all the songs on this side are excellent at keeping interest. Just when you’ve thought the song has kind of used up all of its tricks it adds another element to keep you hooked

The concept of a ballad type track while keeping a bit of that club beat in the background is fun too

Carly’s voice does sound really prominent in this, she sounds really good

It’s so interesting, in tracks like this Carly’s actual voice is almost a background element. It feels like an equal element to everything else going on, just another puzzle piece. which is a good thing. I think everything here is extremely purposeful and successful
