The original rule, which DOT also said it's considering revoking in full, was created because passengers complained they felt deceived when advertised fares didn't match up with the actual price.

The requirement is part of a broader 2011 rule requiring carriers to disclose the total price to be paid by the customer, including taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges -- with the topline number presented in a larger font than those individual components.
